WEDNESDAY - DECEMBER 6
HALF-CENTURY OREGON IAN.
On Tuesday, December 4, the
' Portland Oregonian rounded out a
half oentury of existence. In com
memoration of the semi-centennial
of its being a speoial edition was is
sued, giving a oomplete history ol
the paper, its publishers and editorB.
Cuts of the old and the magnifioent
new home of the paper are given,
also) a fao-simile of the first number.
It is not too muoh to say that com
parisons between the err all one
story office of 1853 and that of tin
palatial and modern built nine
story quarter-block struoture o
1000, are not more marked ' thai
comparisons of the pioneer four
page number -with the well edited
progressive Oregonian of today.
The brains that made the earlie.
Oregonian a power in the thei
new state still happily direot U
business and editorial destiny
Sinoe 1860 H L Pittock has best
oonneoted with the paper as sole, or
part owner, daring the latter yeart
attending to the duties as pub
lisher. II W Scott, who well de
serves the title of the Nestor of
Oregon journalism, has directed
the editorial opinions of the Ore
gonian since 1806, with the ex
oeptlon of the' interval between
October 1872 and Apill 1877. It
is but a just oompliment to Mr
Scott to say that his politioal ed
itorials are keen and inoinive, with
broad grasp of publio events and
generally just oonoeptionB of
the oharaoter of the men
who oontrol publio affaire
rhlle partisan to a certain extent
the editor possesses an indepen
dence of thought that does not de
ter oritioUm of party men and
measures that are not in consonanco
. with his views.
The Oregonian ably stands for
Oregon. It is a oredit to the state,
a newspaper of whioh Oregoniarjs
may well be proud.
A CURIOUS DECISION.
The supreme court of the United
States, that affirms the political
rights of mon without regard to
color, has rendered a very peculiar
deoision on an appeal from a Ken
tucky oourt.
The Kentucky legislature enacted
a law requiring railroad oompanier
operating in the state to provide
separate coaches for white and col
ored passengers. The railroads ob
jected to being put to the additional
expense and trouble, and brought
suit to l-st the constitutionality of
the Uw with the result that the
law was beld good.
That supreme oourt would not
dare hold that a colored passenger
could not ride in any railroad
ooacb provided for passengers on
train, on an equality with the
white man, but beats the devil
about the busb by compelling the
railroads to provide separate
coaches. Of course no negro will
dare asuei t his right to ride in the
white coHob.es in Southern slates
II he did the passengers would at
tend (o his aase.
The wealth of John D Rocks
feller, principal stockholder of the
Standard Oil Company, is beyond
the grasp of the mind. Recent
strong advances in the market
value of the Btock. ascribed to the
reelection President McKinley
oarry it to a valuation of $800,'
000.000. Of this stock Rockefeller
owns forty-three per cent. Figure
it out and you will see that his
share of the stock has a valnation
of $344,000,000. Such an amount
of money is simply too big to think
about.
England paid Amerioan horse
men over $10,000,000 for horses
and mules to use in connection
with the subjugation of the BoerB,
Some of the smart English cavalry
officials tried painting these horses
a khaki, or dan brown oolor, when
they got them to Africa to disguise
them from the long ' range" sharp
shooters of the Boers and succeeded
in killing every horse so treated,
Admiral Crowninehield, ohief of
the navigation bureau, gives oon-
grass some pointers in his annnal
report, which bdow that while we
have the ships to fight a fixet-olass
naval power we have only about
one-fourth of the officers and men
that would be needed to fight them
efieotively.
Attorney General Blackburn has
rendered an opinion, at the request
of State Superintendent Aokerman,
in whioh be says that the Bible
may be read in the pnblio schools
of the state, and that the Lord's
prayer is permissible. Now the
or i tics will be heard from. '
