A DESPERATE MAN.
KuLli Made a Break for Liberty
Alter Being Sentenced.
Kubli, tbe man taken to Balem
from Corvallls tbe other day for lar
ceoy of a wagon, has beeo a trouble
some man to the Benton coonty
officials... He played a farewell prank
before he was taken to Ealem, says tbe
Corvallls Times. It was In the uaturs
ol an attempt to gain liberty. He had
just received sentence, and his guards
were taking him back to jail. Know
log tbe desperate charaoter of tbe
prisoner, Bberlft Burnett bad taken
the precaution of having Deputy Hen
derson along. Tbe party was just
passing out of tbe rear entrance to tbe
oourt bouse. In order to pass through
the- open door, Henderson stepped
ahead. Next came tbe prisoner with
Sberift Burnett behind. Just as
Kubll reached the door be made a leap.
He Is active and Jumped far past Hen
derson and ran down tbe steps. But
It so happened that Sheriff Burnett Is a
pretty good foot racer himself. As
baseball player be ased to run basts
like a quarter horse. In lets time than
It takes to tell it, the sheriff was in hot
pursuit of tbe fugitive. Henderson,
too, was making fine headway until
be routed bis rigging and fell down.
Though Kubll had a start of several
yards, tbe sberlQ . was quickly within
a few feet of him. He commanded
Kubll to atop, but tbe latter- paid no
attention. Then the sheriff find two
shots, at tbe ground, with bis revolver.
Kubll neither threw up bis bands nor
slackened bis pace. - v
. At tbe Simpson orner the aherifl
overhauled his man. Tbe race bad
occupied but a minute, and tbe die
auie covered bad been but Utile more
than half a block. A revolver was
shoved Into Kubli's face, and be was
told to behave or take the conse
quences. He chose to obey. The ring
of the sheriff's voles showed tbattbe
time for foolishness had expired.
Kubll walked peacefully to jail, and In
due time was landed behind tbe bare
at Balem.
