inent name mentioned in this de
partment la that of Gen Low Wal-
lis, the novelist. As Mr Wallaoe
never supported Mr Bryan or any
other Demooratio candidate for
president in his life, this news of
his "flop" makes Interesting read
ing. One of these supplements In
tended for eastern country circula
tion was by mistake eent out Into
Kansas, and soattered broadcast be
fore the mistake was noticed. It
gave a list of five hundred voters
in Lawrence oounly, who hi flop
ped from Bryan to McKinloy, and
as there is no Lawrence county in
the state of Kansas, it produoed
somowhat ot a sensation out there.
Now the Republican managers are
trying to call them all in In order
to send tbem back east where Kan
sas geography is not well known.
THE BETTING ARGUMENT.
The betting odds on MoKinley
have parallels in the case u! Cleve
lan). in 1888. when the odds
ranged 5 to 3 to 2 to 1, yet he 'wm
deleated hy 65 majority in the elec
toral college. In the succeeding
presidential election the odds were
2 J to I on Harrison, yet Cleveland
had H32 plurality in the electoral
college. The betting odds are al
ways in favor of the ' party in
power. .
There is another view of the
situation. Practically all the mil
lionaires are against Bryan. - Tbey
oan afford to bet and lose. The
odds are what they are because the
men with money to wager re
backing their wish and their hope.
Occasionally '' political erithusU
asts overshoot the mark, Fir in
stance a Mr Feidonheimer, just .re
turned from New York, assures the
Portland Telegram that "MoKinley
will sweep the country," and adds
that "even Croker's men are betting
on MoKinley when they "get a
ohance." Now if Mr Feldenheimer
will explain how there can be any
betting going on when both' sides
are anxious to bet on MoKinley he
will relieve many minds that have
been figuring on the proposition.
"All preparations are made here
to enormously swell the vote -for
MoKinley" wires the Eugene cor
respondent of the Salem
Journal to that paper. ' The
"preparations" may have ' been
made, yet there will not be tnnob
swelling witnessed without election
officials do clever work. And the
Guard has no question of the hon
esty of the men who will receive
and count the votes next Tuesday.
