WILL WIN.
The Cities Are Largely in Favor
of Bryan.
If Bryan holds bis vote in the
country he will Burely be elooted,
beoause he shows signs of immense
gain in the oities. Nearly all the
large cities have Bryan mayors
and will roll op immense majori
ties. For mBtanoe in Chioago.
There were added to the registry
lists by the second and last day of
registration 110,013. These, taken
with the 204,490 names placed on
the books on Monday, give a total
of 401,403 names as tbe registration
in the 85 wards of Chioago for this
year. Although a revision of the
figures may reduce this total some,
this is the largest registration in
tbe history of the oity. As com
pared with the registration of 380,-
Z40 ol luo, tbe total tbiB year is
21,158 greater and exceeds tbat of
1808, which was 825,745, by 75,656.
Ubioago will very nearly over
balance the Republican majorities
in the interior of Illinois. Tbe de
tection of tbe Prohibition and re
ligious elements from MoKinley
are large and unless they are rallied
baok into line, as they were in 1896,
MoKinley is a defeated man, sure.
A LIVELY CORPSE.
Kugene Register: "There are
plenty of good, substantial, old-
line Domoorats who could not vote
their sentimonts If thoy would,
simply because there 1b no longer
a uemooratic party In existonoe in
this oountry."
And yet, to be aoourafo, Bryan
reoeived, 6,602,925 votes in 1896,
nearly 47 per cent of the total vote
cast. If there is no "Democratic
pany in existence in ims country"
there is a mighty big substitute,
WELL PUT.

"Mr Ilanna seems to have dom
onstrated oonolueivoly that he can
do much for the laboring man when

would be less the matter with

Li Hung Chang and Prince
Cbing are out in a joint note ask
ing the poweis If it is no about
time to treat for peace. The French
minister of foreign atTalra, M
1'iohon, responds that it will he
time when exemplary punishment
is indicted on the principals of tbe
Chinese government who are di
rectly responsible for the violation
of international law. The oiviliied
world seems determined that China
roust bo made to roaliia ber respon
sibility as a nation through blood
letting uf dignitaries who stand
very near tba throne. '
The Orogoniau indorses the as
sertion of the WaaMuyton Post
tbat Bryan should have made no
further personul campaign than bis
Indianapolis speech. This is very
moderate for the Oregonian. Na
turally the Oregonian could bare
15 been expected to declare tbat it
00 1 would have been more agreeable if
j I Mr Bryan had retired bef'ire ho
us I made the Indiana speech. The'
Portland paper ' is getting very
liberal in its views.

who ships them himself has noth
ing to show for it when he has
paid the robber prices charged for

A Portland policeman has oaufe
to be haughty and proud. Single
handed, and though 'Confronted
with a revolver, be arrested three
footpads early Friday morning,
within half an hour after they had
stood op their victim, and marched
them to the nity jail together.
