ERN POLITICAL SITUATION.
lion James K Weatherford, of
Albany, is very wsll known by not
'a few Lane county cltiiens as a
man who does not easily get ex
cited. His report on the political
situation east of the Rooky moun
tains at a Democratic club meeting
at Albany the other evening, as'
reported by the Democrat, will
prove interesting, at least to the
many who know the man:
"Hon J K Weatherford was
present and give a talk on his ob
servations upon his recent trip east.
Everything was ablaze with poli
tics and there was speaking every
where. In Minnesota there was
great enthusiasm, 1100 delegates
then returning to their homes from
the state convention, confident that
the state would go for Bryan. At
Chicago at the national Democratic
headquarters he found ex-Governor
Stone in charge confident of Bryan's
election. The indications in Chi
cago were emphatically Bryan for
Illinois. In Chicago anywhere
from 30,000 to 50,000, trusts, and
imperlalisru everywhere, were
driving men to the Demooratio
party. He passed through the coal
region with its empty dinner pails.
"Incidentally Mr Weatherford
made some strong arguments in
favor of expansion only by the con'
sent of the people, as hag been our
policy in the past, and not through
force, taking in a people that can
never be assimilated. We want a
government resting on all the peo
ple, not on one man like Mark
Hanna. It is an interesting faot
that the oost of the Philippine war,
$225,000,000 a year, is more thao
the entire annual resources of the
PaoiQo coast states, and is more
than the $187,000,000 spent in the
United States annually for educa
tion, with nothing to show lor it;
and the seeds sown are seeds
of destruction."
