Cottage Grove Muggett: The Uni
versity of Oregon opened Us oolleglale
year on Wednesday under tho brightest
auspices. There are already over 200
atudenta in atteudauoe, of which
number about 100 are new students. It
Is confidently expected that before
registration' closes on December 1st

ACTIVITY IN BOHEMIA.
Superintendent Bruneau, of He
lena Mine, Reports That
Prospectors Are Still Busy.
Portland, Sept. 20. Charles B
Bruneau, superintendent of tbe Helena
mine, In the Bohemia district, who Is
in the city on business, reports con
siderable activity in the Bohemia
oountry. Prospectors, he says, are still
aotive, and considerable development
work Is in progress. Tbe recent strike
made about a mile west of the Muslck
mine, be reports fully as rich as was
represented, some of the ore running
Into the thousands per ton.
At the Helena mine there are now
about 24 men employed. This includes
the force of carpenters and mechanics
engaged In erecting bunkbouses, mess-
houses and other buildings. Most of
the machinery for the increase of mill
capacity Is already on tbe ground, and
It la expeoted to have 10 stamps in
operation by Ootober 1. The present
oapaoity of the plaut Is five stamps.
All told, Mr Bruneau says about 000
feet of tunnel work baa been done on
tbe Helena. There are four tunnels,
and the greatest depth thus fur at
tained Is about 300 feet. Development
work at present la confined to tunnels
Nos 1 and 2. From four to live feet of
good milling ore is being taken nut
along the hanging wall, This ere
averages from 10 to $20 in gold to the
ton, most of It being free milling, the
base being of a high grade concentrat
ing order.

Mr Bruneau says the ore now being
taken out averages fully (20 a ton.

The Fall Session Begins Monday,
September 24.

Next week will witness the begin
ning of anoiber school year in our
publio schools. Every indication
points to a larger opening attendance
fiau any previous year. All the
teachers are in tbe city aud ready fi
earnest work. All four of the new
additions to tbe corps have hi d con
siderable experience elsewhere, and
will no doubt prove worthy of the ap
pointment. Theooarse of study in thu elghi
grades will couiorm exactly to the
course established by the slate depart
ment. Tbe addition of the fourth year
to tbe high school course places Eu
gene on an equality with any ruber
city in Oregon in tbe educational ad
vantages it oilers Its boys and girls.
The arrangement between the board
of education and tbe regents of the
University by which any student
having completed the eleventh grade
In the high school ia entitled toad
mission to tbe University a.-ademy
will result; lu the loss of six or eight
twelfth-grade students. This will cut
down tbe number ol tbe first gradu
ating class to ten or a dozen, but what
they will lose lu numbers will be made
up by tbe prestige of being the first
olaas to graduate. It Is the Intention
of tbe board of education to make
these first graduating exercises tbe
most Important event iu the
history of the Eugene schools.
These graduates will not only be
entitled to admission wlthoui examiua
tion to tbe freshman class of the
University of Oregon, but to any other
university on the coast. The up-to-date
high achool of today i ives its
student, a more complete and mure
liberal education than the nveraie
college of 25 years ago,
Tbe Eugene nigh school is still in
the formative stage and local condi
tions bavo governed to a curtain .ex
tent the direotlon of its growth, but it

cumbs to Heart Failure.

county, died frum heart failure yester
day. The circumstances is given out
by Itoss Huston, who cume in tooav
after undertaking supplies, areas fol
lows:
The old gentlemau wi nt out yester
day morning to burn sc me logs and
was last seen alive by his daugi.lei-ln-
law about 10 o'clock. At noon Mr
Erdmann bad not returned to tbe
bouse and bis son went to look for
blm, finding him dead and lying close
to tbe burning logs.
From a survey of the situation It
was evident that tbe old gentleman
bad expired from heart tdlure while
sitting on a block and the body bad
fallen to the ground. Death must have
been sudden as the body fell on soft
ground and there was no evidence of a
struggle, notwithstanding the fact that
the head was virtually lu tbe lire when
found, and tbe right side of the face,
ear aud hair were badly burned.
As the cause of death was clearly
manifest Coroner Griffin did not con
sider his official Investigation neces
sary. Tbe funeral will he held to
morrow morning at 11 o'clock, Jtillut
and Albert Erdtiiaiin, both sons of tin
deceased, reside in this county, and
he bad been residing with the former.
Deceased wae born in Germany 72
years ago, and bas been feeble for some
time with occasionalttacka of heart
trouble.

BC Dunn died at his residence on
Thirteenth and Willamette streets
Thursday, Bept. 0, 1900 at 5:50 p m,
after a lingering illness.
Deceased was born In Ohio, Febru
ary 22, 1828, and was aged 72 years, 6
months and 25 days.
His early life was spent In Illinois,
He was one of the argonauts of '49, go
ing to California by way of the isthmus.
After spending Borne years in Callfor
nia be returned to Kansas. He was
married to Miss Elizabeth Gill in
1855. In 1876 he came to Oregon,
locating on a farm 3 miles south
of Eugene aud had since been aeon
ttnuous Lane county resident. He
leaves a wife- and six cliiuliui,. i'b
children are Wilbur H Dunn, Kinsos
City, Mo; Arthur G Dunn, Washing
ton, D V; Mrs K K Wheeler, 1'alouso,
Wash; Frank li Dunn, Harry Duuu,
Mrs L O Skeele, Eugene.

and was respected by all his ueic,hbrH.
