Drawing from memory Is oue of the
most dlllietilt things In the world to do.
Even professional urtists llnd that they
must rely largely upon hasty Jottings

their pictures. Those .who are not nrt-
Ists need to look keenly aud closely at
what they wish to recollect, for they
must depend upon their memory to
bring details back to them. It Is an ex
cellent corrective of superficial observa
tion to sketch n scene as we think we
saw it nnd afterward return to the
scene and take another view. It Is a
training both iu accuracy and humil

The Hessian Fly.
l'he following is copied from the
Epitooiiat:
It Is a well established fact that tho
Hessian fly is one of the worst, if not
the wrst pest, with which the wheat
produ(!ers of this couutry have to oon
teud. lis very name ce cidomya
destructor is significant of its nature.
Ii Is while in the larvae state that it
does the great damage. The lly lays
its eggs at the base of the wheat
leaves, In early fal!, where tti-y batch
aud infest the young wheat plants
near the surface ol the grouud.
When full grown esch larvae changes
to a pupa which resembles a tinx seed
in both size aud shape. Remaining in
this Btate during the winter, the adult
ties emerge in the spring aud lay their
eggs at the baiec of the leaves, that le.
between the bases and the main stock,
and some distance above the ground,
where they hatch and coutluue the
work of destruction.
TREATMENT.
One of the best methods of combat'
lug this pest is to sow, quite early in
the fall, a narrow strip of wheat around
the field, aud when the wheat on this
strip becomes infested with eggs and
larvae plow it uuder. This destroys
nearly all the fly aud the wheat can
be sown and will suiter but little in-
Jury.
Another preventative Is to delay the
sowing until after the first frost, but
this Is not quite as effeotlve as the trap
crop method.
