FRIDAY - SEPTEMBER 21
POSSIBILITIES OF THE PRESI
DENTIAL ELECTION.
McKlnloy's buccobb four yeara
ago was the most dooieive for nearly
a quarter of a century. His plu
rality over Mr Bryan was only six
hundred thousand, but the elec.
toral vote Blood MoKinloy 271
Bryan 176. The majorities hero
seem overwhelming, but In presi
dential oontosts the plurality has
little to do with the oaee. In sev
eral eleotions the winning man has
bad the plurality against him. Tbo
interest of the figures of the last
contest rests in the laot that a
change of forty-eight olootoral voteB
would have eluuled Mr Bryan.
The following table will sbow
how this has been reduoed to n
closer margin than many people
supposed it aould be:
Plurality. Electoral Vote.
California 2,707
Went Virglul..ll,487
Oregon 2,117
Indiana 18,181
Koutuofcy 281
North Dakota... 6,040

Totals. 40,612
California has 0 eleotoral votos,
Kentucky 13. Bryan, In 1806, bad
1 eleotoral vote from eaoh Btate;
henoe the figures given above.
If 20,257 of tbe votes had been
taken from MoKinloy and trans
ferred to Bryan tbe whole oleotion
would have been ohanged and Mr
Bryan would be president today;
or if the other states should vote
the same iu tbe ooming eleotion
and he should get these 20,257, he
will succeed Mr McKinley,
But it does not do in political
calculations to figure exclusively
upon one side. Other returns
have interest. For instance, Bryan
carriod tbe following states by
slender pluralities:
Plurality.
Wyoming 6S3
Bou Hi Dakota... 183
Temiiwaee 17,4115
Kansas 12,200
Nebraska 13,676

So if 22,054 or these votos had
been transferred from Bryan to
McKinley, or if they should be
transferred UiIb year with tbe other
states remaining as in 1806, Mo
Kinley would got SOS votes in the
electoral college to 130 for Bryan
or considerably more than twice as
muoh as Bryan.
These things show the great un
oortalnties that attend a presiden
tial election,' ai.d wheu you add
two million new votes to tbo com
binalions that can be mado, tbo
prudent man wjll wait uutil tlui
returns are in beforo beinu sure of
tbe results.
TAMMANY WENT TO BRYAN.
Those people who affect to bi
Here that Bryan has surrendered
to Tammany forget that it was not
many months ago, when Invited to
attond the Jackson Day celebration,
Brysa answered by a letter in
which be figuratively took the
Tammany bound by ibe throat and
whipped it until it crouched in the
dust, wbincd and licked tbe band
of tbe master that wielded the
oudgel, Bryan plainly told Tam
many that it had treacherously
sacrificed the presidential ticket in
lS'JG for its own aggrandizement,
and that it muBt give undoubted
proof of loyalty before it could
claim recognition from the national
democracy.
Tammany has gone to Bryan in
stead of Bryan to Tammany. Mc
Kinley adherents may well fear
the result in New York. There is
no bargain and sale of Tammany
for the Republican cause this pres
idential election.
No times are like these times.

body burnt without attempt at
