A late San Francisco Examiner
has a vary suggestive cartoon. Our
readers wil remember that the
commerchl travolnrs, "drummers,"
wee altruist a unit for McKmltt'
in 1896, and tbul they contributed
in no prosit extent to tbe success of
tbe Republican ticket.
McKinley was elected president.
The capitalistij organization that
contributed tbe money that Mark
Hanna bo effectively need in that
campaign felt secure in a four
year's lease of life for their schemes,
and trusts sprang up on every side.
Tbe manufactuiers pooled their in
terests, stifled competition, and
tbere was no more use for tbe
"drummer;" They had the market
by the throat, and tbe buyer had
no choice. It was tbe same to him
of whomsoever be bought. Tboee
drummers who shouted so vocifer
ously from Maine to Oregon for
McKinley loBt their jobs.
Tbe Examiner cartoon showd the

representing the trusts, holding a
skull labeled "The Commercial
Traveler" in his band. Mark
Hanna stands to his side, a little
behind. "The Trusts" representa
tion is made to say: "Mark, do
you remember how tbe poor cubs
worked for us in '907 I wonder if
we should cut off a check of your
coat tail and send it around to his
widow?"
ONE CENT DAMAGES.
The San Francisco Call was the
defendant in a $225,000 libel suit
recently. Tbe jury gave the ag
grieved party one cent. In the
earlier days of Oregon politics
"Bill" Watkinds, of Salem, was a
Democratic war-borse. For a time
he published a newspaper at tbe
capital, and bis political enemies
were not slighted as to personal at
tentions. One of Watkind's victims
sued him for $10,000 libel damages.
Tbe jury gave him one dollar.
A celebrated local lawsuit over
the possession of a monkey was
settled at the same term of tbe
oircuit court, the jury awarding the
plaintiff oue cent as full compensa
tion for the monkey. This gave
Watkinds the opportunity to out
his enomy to the quick with tbe
statement that the oharaotor for
which damages were olaimed was
worth but "ninety-nine cents more
than a monkey."
