on this Philippine question, at
tempt to mask cowardice under ttie
the name of patriotism, may find
themselves mistaken: and they tier
tainly will, unless the spirit of the
country baa greatly ohanxed eiu
1804, when a political party crime
neiore trie country with a 'surien
aer platform, in a crisis of war."
No intelligent person doubts
that the Oregonlan editor km'
ingly and premeditatedly utter a
falsehood when he obarges Bryan
, and bis sapporters with "oowurd
loe" in dealing with the Philippine
quostlon. Let us call attention '
some indisputable facts; T
Filipinos had driven the Spaniard
to refuge in Manila, and whan
Dewey destroyed the Spanish fli et
before that oity and obtained tint
surrender of the forts thereabout
Spanish control and power in t'io
islands came to an end.
The title gained by Dewey in .tli
possession of Manila, and the o-

monetary consideration, praotioally

NEW YORK JOURNAL TEST

Aooording to the test vote taken

Out of the tout vote taken, 4,

1890 will vote for McKinley this
year, whereas 205 Indicate their
inteatfon, on signed blanks, to vote

The Journal' ailvmiitM pull ot

The Oiegonian "note and com

parent satisfaction that W S Strai
ten, a Cripple Creek, Colorado,
mine owner who contributed $25,.
000 to the Bryan campaign fund in
1896, has sold bis mine for $10,
000,000, and will give 'more than
$25,000" to the McKinley campaign
fund this year. Four years ago
the Oregonian had nothing but
abuse for Colorado mine owners
who contributed to the Bryan fund.
The posiierHion of ten million dol
lars though, even without helping
fill the McKinley Back, is sufficient
to gain udmintion, if o.,t wort-hip
of the Orejinniikii.
