"Dan" Test, as he was familiarly
known In Eugene, came to Lane
county with tbe immigration of 1858
He married here and took a homestead
on the prairie between Irving and
Juuotlon. Tbe family moved to Eu
gene about leu years ago, and resided
in tbe present Galuey Mathews resi
dence on Ninth street, uutll about six
years ago when tbey moved to East
Portland.
His wife and seven grown sons and
daughters survive him: Mrs Marshall,
of Eastern Oregon, Mrs Mary Wort-
man, of Portland, Mrs M 8 Barker, of
Eugene, and Ed Tet, Mrs Emma
Hill, Grant Test and Frank Test, of
Portland.

HERBOLD IS COACH.
Fred D Herbold bas been selected as
coach of tbe University of Idaho foot
ball team, which Is to meet the Blair
eleven during the fruit fair in tbis city.
He Is considered the man to bumble
the Washington boys and to take away
tbe football pennant from all of the
western institutions.
Carroll L Smith, tbe manager of the
Idahos, has spent much time in Spo
kaue looking over tbe field for a suita
ble man to direct tbe destinies of bis
team. He now annouocea that tbe
old college tackle and half back, Fred
Herbold, will be tbe man tbe Spokane
athletes will have to blame for tbe stifl
games of tbe Idaho players. Herbold
is a well-known hero of tbe gridiron
and Is considered one of tbe strongest
players In tbe West. He has had ex
perience en many teams and bas
always held bis own against the op
posing man.
Herbold began bis career as a player
of distinction In 1893 on tbeUuiversity
of Oregon team, where he ployed for
four years. For tbe next two years be
was the rushing back of Purdue, Indi
ana, University eleven, and was one
of their strongest players. He Is a
great line bucker and goes through tbe
opposing Interference like a plle-Jrlver.
He will teach tbe Idaho players the
sume style of v rk, and heavy plays
with occasion!'.! open run. will an-
doubtedly be tbe game with which
tbey will meet tbe opposing teams.
Herbold bas received splendid coach
lng. In 1893 be was under tbe tute
lage of Young, of Princeton, then un
der Church, of tbe same Institution,
In 1896 he was taught other points of
the game by Quarter-back Benson, of
California, and in 1896 by Flick, ol
California. In 1898 be played under
Woodrutt, of tbe University of Peun
sylvania, and last year be coached
the well known Butte team of Mon
tana.
