LOVE TRIUMPHED.
v
Mary ITRrolds father was a farmer in
a small way, and, ultuouh he could not
aETord expensive dresses for his duugtitfr,
he gave her the beuelit af a fair educntiou
.Mary was by no means aii ignoramus.
Her faiher'a only bister, Delia, luarrhtl
a wealthy city merchant, aud when Mary
was l'.l she was invited to pa;u the win
ter months at their elegant house on Mur
ray Hill.
Mary's Instincts and Ideas were high
toned aud her tastes artistic. She liked
loft laces and jewels, she delighted to
wrap Aunt Delia's costly shawls about
her shapely shoulders nnd let them trail
rracefully over the velvet carpet anil to
fold tho dainty laces against the clear
white and pink of her exquisite face and
Imagine herself some fair priucets.
Aunt Delia encouraged the girl in this
she arrayed her in the finest nnd intro
duced her into society and was proud of
the Bensntlon her rare loveliness excited.
Mary's thoughts are best expressed by
reading over bur sister s shoulder the let
ter tii at she received somewhat inter,
This sister, Louisa, was the eldest, very
plain and very pood. Mary confided in
her without reserve.

Iet me whisper to you alone that I have two
admirers. Of course there are a .-ore or so o(

but there are but two eligible for matrimony.
One of them, Clifford Mason, ia a p fleet

He's a gentleman; but, alas, notwithstanding
all this, he la poor. Auut says that he'll have to

What would you say, sister mine. If you saw
your pet blazing with diamonds and dressed in

What shall I do hew decide? Semi your homily

p. S. I think even you could not help being
pleased with Clifford Mason. There Is something
grand and noble about him.
WiUoughby sent her costly bouquets
and seemed to live but for her smites, yet,
with a woman's Intuition, she kuew that
beneath his courtly manner there was a
hard, selfish nature, but she thought that
he loved her as much ns he loved any
thing beyond his own pleasure aud com
fort. Her heart lingered lovingly upon the
manly words of Clifford Musou. "I nm
poor, darling, but I could labor cheerfully
for j'ou, for I love you."
She asked herself. Do I love Gil end
WiUoughby? If he were poor or ill,
would I be willing to work for him?
Could I at-CLpt of "shnhby gentility" and
wear mn.de over dresses for his sake? If
he should lose his wealth, could I bo a
true, loving wife all the Bnme?
"Oilead ts not a man to die for a wom
an, not for a woman to die for," she
added, ftnd with the tears trembling like
dewdrops upon her long lashes she
struggled ngiSnst the temptation of being
the envied wife of a millionaire.
And when the struggle was ended nnd
love had triumphed over ambition it was
a time of joy wheu she promised Clifford
Mason to be his own true, loving wire,
in poverty or riches, in sickness or in
health.
It was a jdorious day In June when
these true lovers were mari'cd tit the old
farmhouse whore she had passed the
happy days of childhood, but she was
quite couienl when her husband told her
that he had provided a plain, comfortable
home in New York city.
It was evejiing when they arrived, and
when the uirrlago stopped before n
stately mmihion on Fifth aveuue and
Aunt Delia tame out In the hall to wel
come them she felt as if It wns a pleas
ant surprise. Could it be possible, after
all, that her proud Aunt Kustmnn meant
to forgive her for the serious fault of
marrying a poor man!
And w hen she had finished a tour of
exnminution through the house nnd duly
admired the decora tlous of the rooms,
eah prf.oi t:i its way, she congratulated
her aun; iiv-a the possession of so fine a
mansion. "I loved the dear old place on
Murray Hill," she said, "because It was
there that I first met Clifford, but this
Is fit for u king's palace." .
"Do ytm regret having rejected the mil
lionaire for the sake of oue who has but
a loving heai't mid willing hnnds to offer
you?" Inquired her husband.
"I owu thai I was tempted, Cliff; but,
you see, love triumphed."
Clifford Muson wound his arms around
her and, looking Into her beautiful face,
radiant with love and happiness, said:
"Then welcome home, dear Mary, for
you are sole mUtress here."
"What!" she exclaimed, In astonish
ment. "Will you not love me just as well for
having deceived you? For this Is my
excuse: I wished to be sure that you
loved me. Mary, I am not the poor man
that you thought. I fear that you will
have to put up with the incumbrance of
my millions, after all." New York News.
Monntaln. of tbe Deep.
Many miles off the coast of New
foundland the bottom of the ocean rises
in a remarkable way and forms a com
paratively shallow bnsin, enormous in
cxtcut and surrounded by water five
miles deep. This region Is known as the
Newfoundland bnnks and is the famous
trystlng place of the merciless fogs and
tee clad brotherhood of tbe north.
As these Icebergs approach tbe warmer
climate tbe action of the sun and water
upon tbem is remarkable and does for
them what the sculptor srnisei aocs ior
the block of marble. Ojl of shapeless
masses appear forms of the finest archi
tecture. A drifting mountain careens,
topples over and finally twists Itself into
a beautiful cathedral or a many turreted
fortress, set high upon an elevation of
clearest marble, vast Interiors formed by
Icy arches springing from great bits of a
breaking berg and all these forms draped
with rich traceries of cream white lace
in designs undreamed of.
Then, too, the melting ice on the crests
of these bergs fnlls down the slippery
sides aud Into the sea In streams and
cascades, and, strange as It seems, this
water is always fresh, despite the sur

THE ACCUSING CUP?
BV BART Kt.NNEUV.
A certain wine cup l.-!angiii to Jiu;il,
a Persian king. To him it bad come as
an heirloom from a long Hn f unntoi.
He prieed It over nil things.
Truly this cup was a marvel or exqui
site craftsmanship. The muno of in
maker was lost mid tho mists of deu 1
ges. Indeed so magical seemed the skill
of its fashioning that some there were
who thought that it surely must be thu
work of a power more than mortal. It
was formed wholly of jewels that were
fastened tug.-tlier by some strange, suhtlo
device, and it was shaped in a munnt-i
most curious. Its ernl'tman luid taken u
dower of piculiar beauty for his desigu.
As Darab on feast utghts held it,
wine filled, before the light it seemed as
if a mnny tinted cluster of precious
stones was plunged into a luminous sea
a st-a softly, sensuously red. The rurc
old grupe juice, fostered to life in the
long ago by tho sunlight, appeared to
awake, to exult, to livu again the glow of
a milder light.
Hut none might drink from this cup
but Da nib Darab. tho kind
Toghrul, the soothsayer, he of the white,
flowing beard and mystic, piercing eyes,
averred that this cup ofttimes possessed
strange powers, lie said that if Darab
gazed Into the depths of the wine ns it
foamed and sparkled within its embrace
ho might see, as in pictures, happenings
In faroff places, or he might seo deeply
into the workings of the hearts of those
who stood neur.
This saying of tho soothsayer had
caused fear to enter into tho minds of
tho courtiers, and whenever Darab look
ed steadily into the cup ail trembled, as
none knew what next might happen.
Again, it wns whispered, by whom none
could tell, that If it were destroyed Darab
would die, and never mora, would, ono of
his race reign as king.
Thus was this cup of grave, of ominous
import.
This night was a night of feasting and
grand revelry within the king's palace.
Lights flashed and sheened. Wines of the
rarest and choicest vintage llowod freely
as water. Delicato viands, fruits nnd
Bubtlo triumphs of cookery were spread
upon tho great tables. And thero wore
gleam ings of countless gem lucrustcd,
precious metaled goblets. Glorious clus
ters of flowers gnvo forth a Bense lifting,
all pervading aroma. Varied and min
gling colors and hues raptured tho eye.
And here were women of a glory and a
benuty indescribable. Silks shimmered,
ev siioiio.
And hero was tho cold, cruel glint ol
eteel, for soldiers, accoutercd, were at the
feast
Sablo slaves ministered to the wants oi
tho feasters. Bracelets and anklets of
ivory flashed ns they tlitted to and fro.
King, satraps, women, court iers-nay,
all were blended in a grand, joying uul
tion. Like tire tlamcd all heurts.
And music rang.
Tho moon's light was calm and clenr.
Stars twiakled, glistened in tho profound
afar. All was still. Hut in the siillucss
there seemed to sleep some strange,
mighty secret. And thero cumo into th
air n henvincss. '
"IIo, Toghrul, Toghrul! Thou ol
soothsaying fame, come hither, com
hither! I have gazed luto this erp, and,
lo. It has revealed to me the face and
thoughts of one who Is a traitor one v. ;c
plots against my life, my throne, my all.
Yonder bo stands. lie! ITyder!"
It was Darab who culled out thus In o
loud voice. A wicked, cruel smile played
in his fnco as he pointed to Ilyder, one
of his satraps. .The night had passed
well on, nnd the revelry had become ol
the wildest.
A silence ns of tho grave fell over all at
the king made this accusation. 1 hi
knew and feared what was coming. Noufl
dared sneak but Toghrul.
"Art sure, O king?" ho asked. The
soothsayer felt kindly toward tho satrap.
"Sure as that I am of woman born,"
Darab replied as he again looked Into the
cup, "here is tho face of yon unworthy
servant. Now it Is still and tells naught,
but an Instant ago as I gazed Its lips
moved, and from them I heurd murmur
Ings of revolt and treachery. Ho muat
die. This cup is my safeguard nnd guide.
IIo. euarris! Seize yon trnitorl"
Hyder turned pale, Hravo though he
was, he trembled trembled becauso of
ono he loved ami little ones. IVs, he
was lost lost. Ofttimes had he known
Darab to order men to the death because
of things revealed to him in this strange
cun.
Hyder was seize... aud death hung In
tho air when a loud cry broke from Da
rab. Again he was looking into the cup,
but thia time his fnce was convulsed willi
fear.
"Ho! To nrms, to arms!" he cried
wildly. "Soldiers, all to arms! Foemen
Burround the palace! Rebels ore upon
ns!"
Hyder was loosed, and In a flash tlx
revel was turned to a wild, terror strick
en confusion.
Then was heard a low rumbling in the
air, and suddenly there camo a fearful
roll of thunder ami a succession ot uitna-
lng, destroying lightning flashes. The
walls of the palace near the king's throne
fell.
Clashing of arms and savago shouti
were heard In the distance.
Darab was standing with the cup
raised aloft In his right hand. Ho wai
invoking aid from tho powers above.
Near him stood tho soothsayer and Hy
der with drawn sword. He wns prepared
to defend to the last gasp the king who
had ao cruelly condemned him. Shrieks
and cries were rending the air.
Then came a lightning flatdi t hat waff
mightier nnd more blinding than nil that
hsd'irone before. It struck the cup, shiv
ering it to dust. Darnb fell dead. It
was even as if tho power: abovo had
spoken.
Into the palace rushed the enemy.
And tumult reigned. Exeha.iRe.
