This is the story of a house In New
York.

"His accents were so suave that, for
getting any suspicion, I did not stay his
hand when he poured some liquid like
claret into one of tho long decanters.
Lifting it to my lips, I found It was a
curious tasting beverage. For a moment
I thought it was molten fire. Then tho
black retainer appeared to bo dancing bo
fore my eyes, and I lost consciousness.
"When I awoke, I was on the couch In
the same room. Tho lamp was stilt
burning. I raised myself up. My head
ached terribly. On a chair near me sat a
little monkey grinning and chattering.
It startled mo at first, but la my trado
one ceases to be afraid, because back of
everything, however mysterious, wo are
accustomed to find human cunning.
"I rose, threw back the shutters, and
daylight poured into the room. I had
been there nil night. No one stirred ex

ape. 1 made my way to the outside door,
seeing no one, and ran down tho steps

"I returned with tho policeman on tho

hand as she told her this story:

camo back after that evening. The old

which the robin had sung for the crow
