THE MILLER FAMILY.
State Journal: A story is iioinn
the rounds of the press about a
long-haired brothor of Joaquin
Miller, who resides in Knstern
Oregon and astonishes the natives
by his queer doings and sayings.
The writer of tbis was well ac
quainted with the Miller family
when they resided near Coburg in
this county, when the four brothers
and ths sister Ella were young.
There was no such brother as John
II Miller. The oldost brother was
D Miller and the next was (Jinoin-
natis lliner Miller, now known as
Joaquin Miller, the poet. They
both attended Columbia College in
1800 and 1801 and were classmates

President Brown, ol the Northern
Indiana Normal college, who was
opposed to Bryan in 189G and
used the influence of his position
to tbe delrirent of the democracy,
has announced himself in favor of
the Nribraskan tbis year and bas
pledged his support to the plat
form adopted at Kansas City and
his efforts to secure the eleett o of
Bryan and Stevenson. The an
nouncement caused quite a sensa
tion. President Brown's action is
synonymous with declarations
already made by numerous edu
cators and presidents of colleges in
Indiana, following the example of
President Jordan, of the Leland
Stanford Uoiveisity. Tbe Indiana
college faculties have taken a pro
nounced stand lor the democratic
ticket. They were opposed to
Bryan four years ago, hut investi
gation in the leading institutions
caused them to reverse tneir posi
tions. Congressman Rhea, democrat,
whose title to his teat in oonurees
as a representative of tbe ninth
Virginia district has been sustained
against the contest of General
Walker, the republican candidate,
is a resident of the town of Bristol,
which enjoys the somewhat peculiar
distinction of being in two states.
One part of it is in. Virginia; an
other part lies In Tennessee. The
main etraet of Bristol Is the state
line, and it Is a very conveni nt
