State fair.
The Btate Board of Agriculture ia
Disking a great effort this year to make
t-ie state fair a representative ngricul
tiral aud live-stock show. Trie pre
Miuro lint is out and is being tlior
r uglily distributed throughout the
i rate and iiersoual efforts are being
riade o attract the attention of farmer
i nd etockmen to the very tllieral
I remiums oilered.
Beverai counties in the state are pie
parlug a county exhibit fur the fair,
for they realize that it will be a good
i pporluoliy to advertise their county
in a most practical way. Each exhibit
will be n lecture loom, and au object
lesson (or the home-seeker, where be
can get information, along intelligent
line, and will be worth many dollars
In adveitislng thecjuuty'a resources.
The live-stock show will tie without
question the beat ever held on the
coast. Breeders all over the oouutry
are preparing to exhibit at the fair this
year. There Is an opportunity here in
Oregon for the farmers who have been
ruoning In debt raising wheat, to turn
their attention to the profitable pro
duction of beef, mutton and pork, or
engage In dairying, which has already
taken its place as a leading paying in
duatry In this state. There Is a de
mand for the bent specimens of all
breed', which will continue to grow
for years to come, and there is nothing
that will encourage thla industry so
much as slock shows at the sta e and
county fairs.

A representative of Por'er Bro'., o(

I, fur several day and is anxious to
write contracts with Oregon growers
for tliis year's prune crop. It is not
known wilh wiiat success the agent
ha met, but with the spirit of organi
zation that so universally exists
among the growers of this section, It
U not likely that they will be In aDy
great haste to contract thir prunes at
a nominal figure but rather iuvestt'gate
the benefit to be derived from co
operation. It Is uuderstoiHi contracting
agenrs from California offer to contract
for from 2 to 4 cents according to tiie
grade of the fruit to be delivered.
The shortage of the California prune
crop, which until recently promised a
good yield, is due to the unusual
exten of the June "drop" of the Iruit
Growers In tills county report a con
siderable drooping ol the fruit in th:s
section, which will to an extent
reduce the yield in the Willamette
valley.

is that it was due to subsidence, and
