South Africa Again Heard From
Special to the Guard.
Washington, July 21. Minister Wu, of the Chinese
government, has received during the past 24 hours, two
cablegrams from Sheng, the imperial officer, stating that an
imperial edict just issued reports all foreign ministors in
Pekin safe July 18. The report is further corroborated by
the viceroy of Nanking. This news is most cheering, and
since yesterday when the message came through from Min
ister Conger, there has been joy and rejoicing where before
only sorrow prevailed. Having held out so long thero is
high hopes that the ministers and their families may yet
be rescued.
LI HUNG CHANG TO BE TAKEN.
Special to tbe Guard
London, July 21. The British cruiser Bonaventuro
started this morning from Taku to intercept the steamer
carrying Li Hung Chang and seize and detain the wily
statesman, who has been so persistent in his efforts to
reach Pekin, against the advice of everyone.
Admiral Seymour reports that 'Fein Tsin has been
evacuated by the Chinese. There were strong fears enter
tained that a big battle would result from the largo body of
armed natives in the city, but this is now happily averted.
SOUTH AFRICA HEARD FROM.
Speolal to tbe Guard.
Cape Town, July 21. Tho forces of Lord Roberts have
attacked Middleburg, and a big battle is in progress. The
esult of the fight has not yet been received. President
Kruger is present and is personally directing the defense.
Eugene Is Losing Some of Its
Trade.
TURNPIKE ROD IS ESSENTIAL,
"The road from Eugene to Blue Itlver
should Le improved," said n well
known professional man to a Guakd
reporter this morning. "The trade of
the district will amount lo thousands
of dollars in a year, and Kugeue is
entitled to that trade. Bhe caunot gel
it however, without enterprise.
Brownsville will step in aud secure
what is Eugene's birthright, because
tut town Is spending money ou a
road, and Is already getting trade as a
result."
".My attention was brought to this
mutter very forcibly thin week by an
Kiwteru man, who had been iu the
district on a lour of luspeotiou. He is
well pleased with the camp aud asserta
that it will be prominent iu a few
years. The one thing unexplaluable
to liim was trie fuel that the road from
Eugene to the district is in euoh bad
shape."
It would be a good and profitable
iuveetmentinr Lane county and Eu
gene to build a turnpike the entire
distance. Money spent iu this way is
never wasted. It Eugane is to hold
the Blue River trade the town must
rustle for it, and road building is the
best rustling.

All beginnings are hard, as the

The beginning of everything is a

It separates out the full-grown ber

extravagant, but you won't when
you come to drink the coffee.
