WILLIAM J. BRYAN, THE MAN
Jiiines (Jreelman, the well known
uuspaper correspondent, writes oi
W J Bryan, the omdidalo ot the
democracy for president, as follows
The moral passion which dorr
inatea and enfolds Mr Bryan's
public life la also the koy to hie
private, character. When Clcen

Is something about Mr Bryan thai
makes all who associate with him
more earnoat, more ready to make
sacrifices, more indifferent to mere
abuBe and more Intousely and pe
cunariy Auerican. J tier o are i.o
scorete in bifl life. To bo with him
is like walking on the seashore in
the sunlight. At forty he baa still
the unsullied Ideas, the unbroken
faith of a hoy. And any man may
be bis comrade if he will; nay, bis
very brother.
Keoently in Chloago a committee
of fifty strangers called to osoort
Mr Bryan to puullo banquet. Mr
liryan went on shaving hinnolf
before a mirror while talked to the
committee, and piesently his vis
itors were busy putting his studs
in nis snirt dosoiu. An hour or
two later be soared out of himself
In a really great oration, lifting his
hearers to the supremeat heights of
liatrlotio thoughts an appeal for a
republic to just In all Ha ways, so
majestic lu Its virtue, that all the
nations of the world would turn to
it as the arbitrator of all differ
encea.
Mr Bryan is temperance Incar
nate, lie loves literature rather
than art, the trout atream rather
than the theatre, the farm rather
: than the oily, the church rather
than the cathedral. Ha loves men
more than books aad books more
than money.
' There was a time when Mr
liryan felt that tome day the
crimes of lawless wealth and ra
paoious corporate power against
the toilers of the country would
bring on a physical airujitle, and
in those days .Mr liryan was a
(.'ladiator, wilb the fierce unlor
given spirit of a gUdiaUr, Hut a
new tender aesa of spirit b come
into bis life. He teems to be filled
with the idea that love la the only
niilifu'ng force In the world, and
tl.at love is as necessary an I as
natural in politics and atatesman-
tuo truth, and nothing run induce
bin to abandon a cm- ' he lliink

heard him talk of bis enemies with
out a word of bitterness. I luve
heard him defend Mr McKinliy
from unjust attacks, lie loathes
and avoids wrsonalities or abuse
in conversation. Th'u ia one of
the nobleat and most attractive
'raits in his personal life. He is
decern and tolerant in bis speech;
fair, joct, eveo tempered.
Two days ago a distiuguishf-d
woman said to me: ' You have
associated with Mr Bryan a t rent
deal. Isn't it a fact that he is
provincial; that be lias not polish
enough for the White House?" Il
is true that Mr Bryan is provincial,
hut ooly in the souse that Abra
ham Lincoln was provincial. He
is careless of his clothes but careful
of his morals. He cannot speak
French or lead a cotillon, but be
can give you in toe purest ana
sweeteBt English the story of the
struggle of man for liberty in every
age, and is familiar with (he solid
literature ot tbe world. He has
the outwardness of a man who is
big of mind as well as of body.
There ia the rUKnedness of truth in
all his ways. He lives simplv and

ways or living, hut because bis
tastes are Bimple. The yery Bim
pli -ity of his life and speejh is a
corollary of his native dignity. His
quuint points are the quaintness ol
his country. Like Lincoln hie
peculiarities are the signs of his
pure and undiluted Americanist!-.
Nothing can bo nioie graceful than
hie unaffected, sincere home life.
Il may be true that many ol tne
present elements of of social life in
the Wbite House would be modi
fied if Mr Bryan should be elected
president, but he would bring to
that place the glory of a manhood
that it has not known for many
years. He will attract to the White
House scholars, statesmen and
philosophers, rathor than money
changers or political harlots. And
mo iiumulcst man in the nation
would havo access to the president,
I bavo mot almost evory great
man of my time In the principal
countries of the world, but I have
never met a greater man than Mr
Bryan. As a rule, one finds the
idealist a man of frail body, physi
oully incapable of making a contin
uous struggle. But here is an in
corruptible idealist with the phys
ical Blrengtli of an ox. Nowhere
iu tbe world is there to be found a
more perfect combination of mind,
i-piril and body. The three are
evenly balanced in the democrat o
leader mental energy controlled
by intelligence, illumination in-
plred by philanthropy, virility
lisciplined by virtue. He seems to
row broader and deeper everv
year. His religious convictions
re vital to him hut he avoids re
ligious discunsiona. He seems 'to
feel that religion is a private thing
between a man and hia God. "We
re all trying to cast out devils,"
he Bays, "and eioh man works in
his own way."
Four years agi Mr Bryan was a
Western man. Today be is na
