A GKEAT SCENE
Proving that the People at Kan
sas City Meant Business.
Mr Tillman atepped to Ike front
at the demooratio convention at
Kanaia City and waa greotod with
a oheer. He read the platform in
a lull, round oio, oanlly heard
throughout the hall.
As he proceeded each plank w
greeted wllh applause. The sen
ator accompanied bis rend inn with
emphatic gestures, striding up and
down the platform, turning tliiV

the senate. There was a howl ol
approval aa he olonohed his Oat and
fleroely arraigned the oourse of the

remained for his reading of the
declaration that "imperialism la
the paramount laeue of this cam
paign" to evoke a storm of enthus
iasm, The delegates sprang to
their feet, standing on obalrs, wav
ing hats, handkerchiefs, umbrellas
and flags, while the galleries took
m up the ohorua and oarrled it along
for many minutes. Senator Hill
could be seen marshaling the hosts
to cheer. He held a fan high
above hia head and addod his voice
to the vociferous shouting. A sec
ond time Senator Tillman read
this declaration, and now even a
greater demonstration carried the
convention oft its feet. Suddenly
hundreds, then thousands, ol min
iature American flags were passed
among the delegates, and the whole
floor of the vast structure became a
sea of flags. In an instant later
the flags atrept over the galleriee
like a maga of flames. Bundles ol
them were tossed upon the seals
and distributed. The sceno was
magnificently inspiring, and the
great audience waxed to fever heal.
On each flag was the device, "The
eonelitution and the flag are in -separable,
now and lorever. The
flag of the republic forever; of an
empire never."
While the demonstration was at
its height the band sent auotlier
thrill through the audience by
playing ''Dixie" and a medley of
patriotic airs. State standards
were again lorn down from their
sockets, banners were raised, and a
triumphal procession of delegates
marched about the ball. Now the
(trains of the bruit turned on "My
Country, Tis of Thee," at which
tbe en'ire audience as with a single
voice, joined the mighty ani swell
ing churus. Amid the billowiiii!
of the 11 igs could be mcu a lull
standard bearing the inscription:
"Forcible annexation would he
criminal aggression. William Mc-
Kinley."
A CLIMAX BI'BU.NO.
It was at this juncture that the
climax waa sprung upon the gieat
aaBembly, A huge flag had been
strung across the roof between two
tru8n,and as the signal was given
the cords were cut and slowly
it unrolled its white and crimson
lolds, aa it fell gracefully and hung
over tbe platform slightly to tbe
rear and south of tbe speaker's
desk. The banner was an enor
mous aflair, being fully 50 fret
long and about one-half as wide,
upon the broad stripes were printed
tbe following sentences in large
letters of blue:
"Constitutional governments de
rive their just powers from the con
sent o( the governed."
"The constitution and the flag,
one and inseparable, now and for
ever." "The flag of a republio forever;
of an empire never."
"A republio can have no col
onies," To the vast majority of those in
the hall the Hag was an unexpected
accident, and its appearance was
the signal for a frantio roar, which
caused everything that had gone
before it to sink into insignificance.
For a full two minuteB tbe cords
of the flag caught and would not
permit it to fall to its full longtb,
It was caught up just enough to
prevent the convention from read
ing the inscriptions upon tbe ban
ner, and until they were released
and the banner swung free the en
thusiasm incroaHod every Becond.
When finally every word was visi
ble, there was a climax of cheers
that was deafening.
Senator Tillman stood surveying
the storm and awaiting an oppor
tunity to proceed. The chairman
pounded his gavel and appealed for
order, Dut the march of tbe dele
gates bearing their standards and
banners ran out uninterruptedly
lor 12 minutes. As Senator Till
man was about to resume, he re
marked that tbe thread of his dis
course had been broken, and that
down south they wore in the habit
of saying: "Hell, hell haa broken
loose in Missouri."
There were cries of "Uood, good,"
when the trust plank was read.
Whon the senator reached the re
affirmation of the Chicago platform,
with tbe declaration of free coinage
of silver at a ratio of IS to 1, pan
demonium again broke loom liut
the domoostratiiin was nothing in
omiarison to what had juit oo
ourred when imperialism was an
nounced as "the paramount issue."
Many of the delegates stood on
their ohaira and waved flags, and
oheered, but a very considerable
number more than half held
their seats. Senator Hill was
among those who maintained quiet,
whilo Mr Croker waved a flag until
it broke, and George Fred Williams
led the Massachusetts contingent
in salvos of oheers. One of the
New York delegates raised a stand
ard bearing the inscription, "Don't
think thoro are no 'lG-to-lers in
New York." The demonstration
lasted minutes.
There was intense scorn in the
senator's voice as be read the plat
form arraignment of the llny
Paunuefote treaty, evoking mingled
laughter and applause.
The Doer plank brought out an
other cheer, and the senator re
ceived a round of applatire as he
closed. His voice throughout was
admirablo, and he made himself
heard throughout the vast hall
His reading, too, was forceful and
oflective.
When tho applause subsided,
Chairmau Jones, of the platform
co'niuiltee, said he bad been in
structed to move that the platform
should be adopted by the conven
tion by acclamation. The motion
was put and amid a roar of cheers
and applauso the platform wa
adopted without a word of dissect.
The announcement of Chairman
Richardson, o! the adoption of the !
platform, was followed by a stun-1
mug shout, Khioh made the build
