AMENDE HONORABLE.
In the issue of the Daily Guard
of June 27 the Salem Statesman
was quoted as saying:
"It Is difficult to suppose that
the Statesman can really believe
that our producers of hops, wheat,
onions, lumber, dairy products, etc,
are 'protected' against foreign com
petition by tnrills. Oregon has one
product that is proteoted, one only
wool. And here the compara
tively few woolgrowers ai proteoted
at the oost of e vary body who wears
olothing; In most places, it may be
supposed, the most numerous elate
of population."
This should have- beou ' credited
to the Orogonian. The Statesman
was led to remark:
"Ihe Lugene Guard man Is
slightly . mixed in placing the
statesman in the column with the
newspnpors that slander the pro'
tective tariff, the policy in which
the poople of Oregon, arid espec
ially the farmers of this state are
concerned more than any other
people in the whole iso untry, on
account of the fact that nearly all
of our agricultural pvoiluots need
the assistance of the 'ountom house
duties in order to give them an ad
vantage in the markets of this
country over the surplus artioles of
line Kinds trom other countries,
with oheap lands and labor. The
Statesman hopes that it may never
ioe oiaesed with the newspapers
that would dotruot from the value
of this polioy a. policy that be
comes more important to us as
diversified agriculture is developed
here."
Charity leo.ds us to believe that
the Statesman editor is honest in
his opinions, and that his broad
statement m to the benefits acri
cultural products derive from pro
tective tariff enactments are not
purposoly misleading, but made
through ignorauce. lie writes that
"nearly all our agricultural pro'
dncts need the assistance of the
custom house duties in order to
give them an advantage in the
markets of this country over the
surplus artioles of like kinds from
other countries with oheap Jands
and labor," These facts are pre
sented for his information:
Wheat is "protooted" 25 cents a
bushel. During the year ended
June 30, 1899, the United Stall
imported breadstuff's to tho value of
$2,544,7C5. We exported to the
value of 24C,310,4S7, Yet men
may be so partisan, or ignorant as
to glorify the Republican party for
"protecting" the wheat grower.
Hops are "proteoted" 12 cents a
pound. In 1899 we imported of Ba
varian hop1, a fancy growth thai' id I
and
We
, The
vuuis
. The
to Ai
per pound for the 18U8 crop
1899 crop was sold from 2
cents per pound. Not much use of
12 cents per pound protection for
the hop industry! ouch protection
is a fraud, and the framers of the
statute knew it when they enacted
tho Diugley tariff bill.
Our mills Bhip millions of feet
of lumber to foreign markets. Pro
tection of lumber is a fraud and
the framers of the tariff bill were
aware of the fact. Take so-called
protection to apples, onions, hay,
oats and other agricultural pro
ducts, and export and import sta
tistics show that they require no
protection and, in fact, are not pro
tected by reason of tariff enact
ments. On the other hand: The iron,
cotton, woolen and the lesser man
ufactures are protected to an ex
tent that is almost if not prohibi
tory of foreign importation. And
not content with the fifty to two
hundred per cent protection in
their favor they have banded to
gether in trusts and combinations
to stifle competition among them
selves, and to secure abnormal
profits on the capital invested.
The Statesman is welcome to all
the glory it mny gain in defense of
the system that has built up our
Hannas and Carnegies, and other
millionaires and multi-millionaires
at the expense of labor and agri
culture. .

Necessary to elect 224
lDOludinK one from Kentucky.
Kentucky may be classed for
Bryan this fall with Maryland
chances in his favor. That would
insure his election provided he
could carry New York and hold the
western states that voted for him
in 1896, as follows:
California... 1
Idaho 3
Kansas 10
Montana 3
Nebraska , 8
Boulh Dakota 4
Washington .. 4
Wyoming 8
Total 30
Conceding the three states in the
first table to Bryan, McKinley
must oarry nine votes from the
slates enumerated in the second
table to win. He could win with
Kansas alone, but should that state
fail him be would require the votes
of Nebraska and oun oilier state,
Kansas ai d Nebraska falling he
would require the votes of three
other stales of the list.
