The Chinese may not be able to

they will be able to dominate the

Strawberry Fishing In Chile.
A singular custom prevails In Chile
which In these days of aseptic pre
cautions will cause a shudder among
those who see Infection lurking In ev
ery detail of life. It Is called straw
berry fishing and is conducted In this
fashion:
At the closo of a dinner the cloth is
removed, and there la placed upon the
table an Immense bowl into which are
emptied half a dozen bottles of Bor
deaux wine, four of cherry and two of
rum, besides sugar and nutmeg. Into
I his mixture is put a very largo straw
licrry, which floats upon tho surface.
Tho bowl Is provided with two han
iles. These aro used to lift tho vessel
uid tilt it so that the strawberry may
be brought near tho edge and sucked
Into the mouth. This would appear an
easy feat, but It is a difficult one, as
the fruit rolls over whon touched with
tho lips. The contestant in the effort
swallows a considerable quantity of
the liquid concoction.
This !s tho reason for tho game, for
the bowl Is passed from one to tho oth
er many times in succession before tho
strawberry Is captured. When that
moment finally arrives, all of the
guests have reached a ripe stage of
hilarity. This Is the game as it is
played among the higher classes.
Among those of a lower social standing
the fiery liquor of the country Is sub
stituted for wine. With them straw
berry fishing develops Into a function
compared to which a fighting mixed
ale party In tills town is the recreation
of a group of peace seeking Quakers.

Lincoln. Coolneee.
Thomas F. Prendle, for 33 years a
doorkeeper at the executive mansion,
used frequently to accompany Presi
dent Lincoln on bis walks about town
and has many Interesting things to tell
of that great man, whom he believes to
have been ono of the bravest men the
world has over known.
On one occasion Prendle was walk
ing with tho president down a flight of
Bteps at tho navy department when
they came suddenly upon a man who
was evidently endeavoring to hide him
self In a dark corner at the bottom of
tho staircase. Observing the stranger
nnd fearing be meant harm to the
president, Prendle essayed to place his
body in a position to protect his com
panion. Sir. Lincoln, however, brave and
fearless, as always, stepped forward
and closely scrutinized the man, who
ran rapidly up tho steps and, turning
squarely around when he reached the
top, looked down upon the president,
who did not falter, but continued to
gaze sharply at him. On their return
to the White House Kir. Lincoln said
quite calmly, "Prendle, do you know
I received a letter last night warning
me against a man who exactly an
swered the description of that man
wo met on tho steps?" Leslie's Week

Bomo cedars are undoubtedly more
than 2,000 years old, for, though on
good moraine soil they grow about as
fast as oaks, ou bare pavement? and
smoothly glaciated overswept granlto
ridges in tho dome region they grow
extremely slow.
Ono on the Starr King ridge, only '2
feet 11 Inches In diameter, was 1,140
years old. Another on the same ridge,
only 1 foot 7Mi inches in diameter, had
reached the age ot 834 years. The first
15 Inches from the bark of a medium
seized tree 0 feet In diameter on the
north Teuoya pavement had 850 layers
of wood, or D7 to tho Inch. Beyond
this tho count was stopped by dry rot
and overgrown wounds.
The largest I examined was 33 feet
In girth, or nearly 10 feet In diameter,
nnd, though I failed to get anything
like a complcto count, I lenrncd enough
from this and mnny other specimens
to convince mo that most of the trees
