it lapsed into forsetiulness of the
fact that a national oampaien Is on,
and that the man whom it supports
tor president, William MoKinley,
is responsible, more than any other,
for a protective tariff system that
taxes the consumers for the benefit
of the trusts, and capitalistic and
manufacturing combinations while
the produoer, upon whom the real
prosperity of tho country depends,
is Bought to be deceived by a trans
parent bit of bunco, sham "protec
lion" that humiliates tbe intelll
gent conservative element of the
Republican parly. Here iB the
Statesman confession:
"It is difficult to suppose that the
StatoBman can really believe that
our producers of hops, wheat,
onions, lumber, dairy products, eto,
are 'protected' aaimat foreign com
potition by tariffs. Oregon has one
product that is proteoted, one only
wool. And here the com pa. a
tively few woolerowers are proteoted
at the cost of everybody who wears
clothing; in moBt places, it may be
supposed, the moat numerous class
of population."
That is the plain truth. Yet the
Republican press, (theOregonian is
one of the main offenders against
its knowledge of the truth), mid
campaign orators for tho next four
months of tho presidential cam
paign will toll the people of this
PaoiQc Northwest how they are
proteoted and benefitted by the
MoKinley tariffl And many of
their dupes will honestly believe in
the truth of such election-made

atock & White was doing business at
Fort Wallace. In the course of a quar
rel Comstock killed White, White
had a brother In New York, a lawyer,
who came out to visit the law upon
his brother's slayer. Comstock was
arrested and brought before Judge
Joyce at Hays City. The prisoner

Joyce's saloon) with two big six shoot
ers belted to his hips.
