Philadelphia, June 21 The weather is fine. Every
effort will be made to close up the work of the convention
today. Of course McKinley will be nominated.
The convention was called to order at 10:30 by Chair
man Lodge of Massachusetts.
Archbishop Kyan, of Minnesota made the prayer which
was forceful.
It was moved that the convention proceed to the nom
ination of a presidential candidate. Carried amirl shouts
of "McKinley, McKinley."
McKINLEY RENOMINATED.
At 1 1 :30 o'clock the roll of states betran . Alabama yielded
floor to Ohio. Senator Foraker presneted the name of Mc
Kinley. All the delegates rose to their feet cheerinc and
waving handkerchiefs, hat plumes, and the band started
up to add to the din. After a time the demonstration
again revives itself with greater vigor. Foraker mentions

being waved, horns blown, and cheering everywhere.
Audience sings "Marching Through Georgia , "Battlo Cry
of Freedom" and "Star Spangled Banner." Noiso com
pletely drowns the brass band and orchestra.
The scene is indescribable in the convention hall.
State after state votes for the "Napoleon of Republicanism."
Every vote was cast for McKinley and the nomination was
made unanimous.
Again the cheering was deafening.
ROOSEVELT FOR VICE-PRESIDENT.
governor ineoaore Koosevelt, ot JNew York, was
placed in nomination for vice president, amid great en
thusiasum. He was nominated bv acclamation.
A great demonstration followed, nearly equalling
that or his chief.
The convention after passing the usual resolutions
adjourned sine die.
HANNA FOR NATIONAL CHAIRMAN.

Philadelphia, June 21. Senator Marcus Hanna of
Ohio was unanimously chosen chairman of the National
Republican Executive Committee amid prolonged cheering
and scenes of intense enthusiasm.

William McKinley Jr, was born 56
years ago, was a lad of 17 years when the
war broke out. Be went to tbe front
as a private. He was mustered out as
major. After the war McKinley
studied law and bnng his shingle out
in Canton, Ohio. He became prosecut
ing attorney ot Stark county and then
entered politics. He was elected to
Congress and served 14 years and was
a leader on his side of the bouse. He
was defeated for Congress In 1800,
afterwards was elected governor and
Senator of Ohio. Major McKinley
married Miss Ada Sazton in 1871.
Their two children died In 1881. Mrs
MoKluley baa been an Invalid for
years
He was nominated for president by
the republican national convention
at St Louis, tbe first time, on June It,
1896, receiving 467 votes, wblcb was
afterwards made unanimous. He was
elected over Wm J Bryan, tbe candi
date of the democrats, popnlists and
silver republicans, receiving 7,104,779
of tbe popular vote to 8 ,602,925 for Mr
Bryan, and 271 electoral votes to 176
for Bryan.
