EUGENE'S OPPORTUNITY.
Twenty-three poundB of gold,
abont $4500, from a fifteen days
ran of the Lucky Boy quartz mil)
should oonvinoe, the most skeptioal
that the men who art developing
mines In the Blue River d is' riot
have good foundation far their
hopes. 1 Blue ; River is bound to
- develop Into an important miuing
'center. '
' ' boes Eugene deslfe to' take ad
( .vantage of the opportunity that her
; .location affords T If. so a united
effort should, be made for the im
provementof the MoKemle wagon'
road. i I'hew are a few miles of ' the
.. road, in the aggregate, that ia sadly
in need of repairs, or rather re
; building. Material la convenient,
' and the oost of making the road
, would represent a very small .'part
of the benefit that would aoorue to
Lane county. Along the upper
portions oi the road mountains of
snaie almost against tne roaa on
be need for repairs at a minimum
oost, It is Nature's crushed rook.
c Mow is the , time to aot. Let
every business man in Eugene
appoint himself a committee of one
to interview the members of the
newly elsoted commissioners' court
and ask the aid that ' should be
readily granted. Let that Hen'
(tricks' Ferry bridge await another
season. Five thousand dollars,
one-fourth of the probable oost of
the bridge, will place the road in
Bpleodid condition. The bridge
will cover but a few hundred feet
over whiob a free ferry bow takes
travel with little, or no delay. From
there to Blue River there are thirty
eight miles of road along which
some very bd plaoes exist. Tbat
thirty eight miles of road is gen
erally good, but those few miles of
dug out mud holes give the road a
bad name for aoross-the-mountain
travel, and render the hauling of
supplies and maohlnery more oostly
than it should be.
Repair the road. Have it done
at onus. It ia for the great financial
benefit of Eugene and Lane county.

The modern war is an expensive

great plea for universal p'ace.
The vote on constitutional
amendments will be very email

woman suffrage amendue it. That
oarried its exnlanation . on ' the

legislature Bhould provide lor the
mailing of oopies ot amendments to
be voted upon to electors a few
weeks previous to the election.
The praotioal working of the
registration election law in Port
land and other towns clearly dem
onstrated tbat it is better than a
prohibition enactment fur eleotion
day. Eugene was free from any
abuse of the liquor babit, while in
Portland only one arrest for drunk'
enneBS was noted. Under the old
regime the Portland 'city jail UBually
was not half lare enounh.
One of the Prohibition omdidates
for representative, Stuart B Hanna,
came out of the Eugene preoincts
with flying colore While the other
two candidates on his ticket
received tbirty-lwo and thirty-
seven votes, respectively, Mr Hanna
rolled up Bixty-Beven.
Pretoria has been ncuupied by
the British, and the prisoners re
leased. President Kruger is a
fugitive without a capital or a
country.
, The Portland vote was almost
twenty per cent short of regis'
tration. Une man out of every
five negleoted to vote.

One of the most Interesting depart
ments In the United States treasury
Is that devoted to the redemption or
mutilated currency. To it are sent all
varieties of bills In every concelvablo
stage of mutilation. It is seldom that
the experts cannot decipher tho burn
ed crisps or piece together tho myriad
fragments. The collection is a curi
ous one, changing every day with
kaleidoscopic rapidity.
The burning of a note usually Dnngs
out Its design In a sort of metallic re
lief upon its surface, and by means of
a glass and other Implements and also
full ana complete Knowieuge oi mo
Intricate designs, no two denomina
tions being alike, on every note Issued
their face value Is learned with in
credible dexterity.
Some arrive In fairly good condition,
some shrunken and water soaked, oth
ers scorched black and twisted out ef
shape; many are merely thin, tiny
black flakes, and In one case now un
der consideration the evidence consists
of a Bmall handful of black powder,
which the affiant swears was (05, acci
dentally blown Into the fire.
Often the mischief has been done by
mice, handfuls of the tiniest of pieces
attesting the evil ways of the rodent
Babies are another source ot trouble,
maniacs, victims of drunken frenzy,
plowshares, sawmills in fact, the
strangest and most unheard of acci
dents are occurring all the time. But
In a great majority of cases the money
has been burned, for a common prac
tice among people who are their own
bankers seems to be the keeping of
their funds In unused stoves. A cold
day comes, the fire is lighted by some
unsuspecting person who "didn't know
it was loaded," and the owner sudden
ly finds that he had money to burn in
spite ot himself.
In one Instance a man having $7,000
In government bonds, besides notes
and gold, kept them In a tomato can
which he placed In tho elbow of bis
parlor stove. While he was plowing
his fields company arrived, his wife
had a fire kindled, and shortly he made
the unpleasant discovery that his rich
es had taken wings. Had he sent the
money just as it came from the stove,
wrapped In cotton, It might have been
saved, but in endeavoring to separata
it it became so churned and ground up
that the department was able to identi
fy only about $2,000 for him.
An old woman who bad accumulated
about (000 was one night at her devo
tions, when the candle In some myste
rious manner was overturned In tho
midst of the money. Now, history does
not relate why it was there or whether
she was returning thanks or paying a
bit of homage to Mammon, but at any
rate It was destroyed, and as she threw
the ashes away and at the Instigation
of her friends picked them out again
there was only enough left to return
about (100 to her.
But much more fortunate were an
old couple In the west The man had
been a soldier, and by the long accu
mulation of years they had saved a lit
tle sum, when one day the wife In go
ing to look at it found that the mice
bad left only a pile of carefully sawed
fragments. Almost distracted, she took
It to the bank, reporting that the last
time sho had counted It the sum had
been (275, mostly in tens and twenties.
It was sent here, the tiny bits sorted
and arranged as only experts can ar
range them, and the necessary three
fifths ot every note was found. But
the best of all was that Instead of (275
It was discovered that the old people's
savings amounted to (350, which
amount was Anally sent to them, much
to their joy.
Of course the greatest precaution Is
necessary, and the affidavits must
leavo no doubt as to the utter and en
tire destruction ot the missing parts of
the notes. . In one case ot this kind a
farmer sent from Kansas some green
backs amounting to (50, only half of
each note being Intact The rest be
declared In a strong affidavit had been
Destroyed and- also stated In what man
ner, but on consulting the books It was
found that one-half the sum had al
ready been paid to another person who
had sent the other halves ot the notes
from another rjart of tho country. Con.
scquently but (25 was returned to him.
Thereupon the cashier who had
transacted the business for the farmer
wrote such an Indignant lotter, saying
tho government had impugned tho hon
esty of the claimant and that he would
prove htm In tho right tbat tho affair
.Was put Into the hands of the secret
service, tho proofs exhibited and tho
imprudent fanner fined (1,000 for false
wearing. New York Tribune.
