WHAT THINKS THE VOTER?
The senseless fight made by the
Guard againBt J. L. Taylor for
commissioner because Mr. Taylor
is not as heavy a taxpayer as bis
opponent has been a great vote
getter for Mr. Taylor and should
insure bis election. Eugene Reg
ister. Tbe "senseless fight made by the
Guard" Rgainst Mr Taylor con
dists in calling attention to the
fact that Mr Taylor, Republican
candidate for oounty commissioner,
pays only 36 cents tax, a special
tax of one cent a head on SO sheep.
He pays no property tax. Also
that Mr Hill, tbe Cititens' nominee,
pays $113 tax. The commis
sioner to be elected next Monday
will assist in disbursing 1250,000
for county purposes during his four
years' term of office.
Voter, think you that tin Gi ard
is making, a "senseless" fight
against Mr Taylor?-.
OUR WESTWARD "STAR OF
EMPIRE."
June 14th tliu HawniMii l.tn le
will be officially turned nvt-r lo the
United States. Uur star of empire
will thus be extended 2800 miles
westward from our central Pacific
continental shore.
Yel we have territory that ex
tends nearly a thousand miles
westward of the Islands. Take the
chart of the world on "Mercator's
projection" and you will doubtless
be surprised to see that tbe western
most cape of A laska extends nearly
a thousand mileB westward of the
Sandwich Islands.
CITIZENS' JUSTICE CANDIDATE
George W Kinsey is the Union-
Citizens' nominee for justice of the
peace for the Engene district. Mr
Kinsey held the office of justice in
one of the precincts for a number
of years, and his administration
was uniformly satisfactory to
attorneys, litigants and the people.
In handling criminal examina
tions, especially, Mr Kinney won
just commendation. He did n it
encourage tbe making of frivolous
complaints, and was very careful
not to bold an ac :used pereon to
meet the grand jury in tbe circuit
court unless there was good cause
to believa that a conviction could
be secured. By conducting the
affairs of the office in this manner
no small amounts were saved the
county in unnecessary oist bills.
A COUNTY WARRANT JOKER?
W B Smith ot Hale ohargfg
County Clerk Lie with delivering
oounty warrants to other persons
than the owners without their
permission. There is a joker In
this. County warrants are worth
1 per cent premium, and a per
son gaining possession of a warrant
gains the extra premium. He
would fnrn the face value of the
warrant, in cash, iver to tbe right
ful owner who would lose tbe
premium.
The county olerk has no riht to
deliver a ounty warrant to any
person except the owner, or on his
written order. If Mr Lee does so
it 1b at bis peril.
FOR ASSESSOR.
Tbe (vuard is pleased to learn
that tbe tide is now running
strongly in favor of Mr E R Parker
for county assessor. It is slated
that liu will reoeive 100 Republican
votes in Cottage Grove preoinots.
Mr Parker is well qualified for the
position, and will run the office ia
n economical manner. On the
1th of June be sure thai a oros is
marked before bis name on your
balbt.
The Baltimore & Ohio railroad

rolling stock are oigars-haped, the
object being to determine tbe
resistance and loss of power caused
by the air.
