WILL THISTLES CHOKE THEM
SELVES TO DEATH?
Evidently the editor of the Ore
gonian ! a bopetul Individual. He
finds consolation in the belief .that
the lull in troBt making Is a sign
that the anxiety and willingness
of manufacturers to stifle competi
tion and rob the publio through
formation of trusts has runs its
course. Perhaps there is nothing
left out of whloh to form a trust;
nothing but ' labor, and that is
never taken into consideration by
the MoKinley trust class of states
men. ,
It seems not to have occurred to
the Oregonian editor that proper
lawf, and the enforcement thereof,
would put a stop to the little less
than highway robbery of which
tariff protected trusts are guilty.
The Dogberry plan adopted by
Republican apologists of bidding
them moderate their unconscion
able domands, and when they
9SKUI
refuse to beed, the admonition
thanking God that they are rid of
responsibility for Buch knavish
trusts will not be endorsed by the
critical voting public.
Will weeds and tinatleu give
place to wholesome grouses and
grains without the use of plow
and cultivator? When they do the
Oregonian editor may expect trusts
to fail because of inherent wrong
fulness.
COUNTY TREASURER'S OFFICE.
County Treasurer Patterson
keeps the office in the courthouse.
Before he took oharge of the office
the business of the county treasurer,
in no small measure, was conduoted
by tbe banks where oounty funds
were held on deposit. ThiDgs have
changed for tbe better. If you
bave business with tbe county
treasurer go to the oourthouse
during UBual business hours and
you will find "Abe" Patterson on
hand.
It is a very welcome departure
from tbe former methods that ob
tained in the office. Then it often
almost required a search warrant
to find the county treasurer when
wanted for business.
Chief Justice Fuller, in rendering
the deoisnn of the supreme court
of tbe United Mates on the con
tested Kentucky governorship case,
got back to first principles. Tbe
decision says, in effeot, that it. was
purely a state case that Kentucky
was in full possession of its facul
ties, as a member of the Union,
and there was no emergency that
called for interference by the Fed
eral government.
Albany Democrat: The North
ern 1'aolno oruisers are now up in
Lane county getting fine timber for
worthless Ranier rock heaps. They
didn't get everything in Linn
oounty, though certainly their share
and what they didn't get another
syndioate whose identity has been
a mystery got, some of the deeds
for whioh have been filed.
Walla Walla Arus: " 'Why is it
that a Democrat can t make
speech without bringing in Mark
Hanna?' asked a republican just
after the adjournment of the dem-
ooratio convention Saturday.
'"Well,' answered Dlok White, 'I
suppose it must be on the same
prinoiple that a minister never
preaoheB a sermon without men1
tioning the devil.' "
General J. B. Weaver, who is in
Portland, says: "Unquestionably
Mr. Bryan will be elected. Noth
ing can beat him. MoKinley is
infinitely weaker than he was four
years ago, and Bryan is corres
pondingly stronger. Tbe ad minis
tratiou is on the defensive all along
tbe line."
Seoretary Gage is worrying about
the mysterious disappearance of
1400,000,000 in gold from the
United State) treasury. Mr. Gage
may searoh us. says the Astoria
Budget, But has he thought to
grab up one of the big trusts and
shake it by the heels?
The Telegram says Congress'
man Tongue has been inquiring
into cyoione Davie' political re-
oord. It will at least be on a par
wttn Tongue's record.
The tugar trust has given sugar
an upward hitoh.
