COUNTY CLERK LEE'S FINAN
CIAL JUGGLE.
The bunday Register takes a
half a column of space to oonvlnoe
itself that the Lane oounty debt is
only $-17,050, as juggled by County
Clerk Lee in the semi-annual
report of March 81. Yet that re
port showed outstanding warrants,
and interest thereon, to the amount
of tll4,0C5.
The Register and County Clerk
Lee plan of figuring uncollected
taxes as available assets against
interest bearing county indebted
ness, and making no allowance for
the county expenses that will acorne
during the period of collection, is a
plain joggle with figures that can
deceive no one. The plain attempt
of County Clerk Lee to hoodwink
the publlo as to the true flnanoial
condition of the connty, if nothing
else, should cause the fair, honest
vote oi the people of Lane county
to be cast for his opponent, Mr.
Milliorn.
The Portland Telegram says
"Mark Hanna has sent no money
to the Republican state committee,
but instead Iihh written several
letters of encouragement to Chair -man
Steele." When ducks cease
Bwimming we may believe that
Mark Hanna has experienced a
obange of heart, and now believes
in allowing the voters, instead oi
money, to settle elections. Hanna
is the arch-corruptionist of Amer
ican politics; and what is more be
makes no concealment of bis
methods and purpose. It is straight
bny witb him.
Un tbe tariff question the Ore-
gonlan stands with Democrats and
Populists. Here is a good oommon
sense statement from a recent issue
of that paper:
"The Oregonian does not advo
cate free trade, which is an impos
sibility, it thinks, however, that
onr infant industries bave in most
instances outgrown tbe need of the
nursing bottle of protection. No
body pretends that the tariff does
not enhance tbe cost of wool, yarn,
blankets and clothing."
The state tax levy this year is
6.3 mills, the highest, we believe,
In tbe history of Oregon. What is
the cause of this bigh taxation?
HaB the state built any vast in
ternal improvements? Has it had
any extraordinary expense? The
answer is no, emphatically nol If
is tbe result of Republican legisla
tion manipulated by bosses who
are manipulating affairs for reve
nue! Do tbe people want a con
tinuation of these high taxes?
The Dalles Mountaineer.
Tbe Eugene Register is doing
business in a county that gave
William J. Bryan 377 plurality,
Yet it kindly refers to a majority of
the voters of Lane county as "fu
socratsl" Who does it hurt by tbe
use of the slang epithet? Not the
Silver Republicans, Demoorats and
Populists who have united on com
mon principles against a oommon
political enemy. The injury will
be found near the Register business
office.
Rev. William T. Craft, who is
interested in spreading Christian
ity in heathen lands, has laid down
the proposition that our intoxi
cants binder missionary work. He
says that even the Mohammedan,
when he sees a drunken man, says,
"There goes a Christian," and when
the Filipino oblldren play Ameri
can, they go Btaggering around.
Those sun-baked Californians are
not making any sport of the Web
foot nation this season. Our timely
rains, as usual, are making abund
ant harvest for the iarmers.
The Harney Valley Items haB an
account of a sale ot a hand of
sheep, delivery to be made after
shearing, for $2.45 per head. Sheep
are sheep these days.
Oregon bests Washington in the
inter-state athletio meet. And
"Dick" Smith is tbe hero of tbe
Oregon boys. He made victory
possible.

Whitmell, Pittsylvnuia Co., Va. " When
I commenced your medicines I had been
treated by different doctors for three
months or more, but would only receive
partial relief for a short while and then
would be worse than before. Was con
fined to my bed most of the time. At
the time I commenced your treatment
my left aide was completely paralyzed.
Had no desire to eat anything; bowels
costive all the time, Nerves were all
unstrung, so I could not bear the least
noise. I also suffered from diseased
ovaries and female weakness. But tiinnks
to my Maker and you, after following
your advice, I am abfe to do all my wash
ing, sewing and house work in general.
I haven't had a spasm In two months.
Left off medicines alxmt one month
ago. Didn't think it necessary to con
tinue them longer, I have taken about
seven bottles of Dr. Pierce's Favorite

Medical Discovery,' and two vials of
' Pleasant Pellets.' I heartily recommend
those medicines to all suffering as I was."
