EARLY TAX ROLL CLOSING.
The oounty oourt has not fol
lowed precedent in ordering the
sheriff to olo:e the Lane oounty tax
rolls and return the same delin
quent May 25.
A very considerable amount of
the taxes for the current tax year
remain unpaid and the ordor of de
linquency, whioh means the
addition of costs for collection, will
fall heavily on many taxpayers.
While the taxes are due the cus
torn of otber years has been to
allow the roll to remain in the
sheriff's hands till a later date
before compelling collection by
levy and sale thoreby entailing
costs on the already overburdened
taxpayer.
Last year tbe sheriff was
forced to return his rolls to the
county court until July 4.
through his control of the livery
business ol Eugene. He informs
us tbitb arrivals of transient men
enumerated in the above cUsbbb
reauh forty to fifty nome days,
II. Ii. Kincaid's record as the
auditing ullicial of the slate of
Oregon during bis four years in-
oumbenoy of the ofuoe of seoretary
of state is an earnest that be will
faithfully serve the taxpayers of
Lane oounty in the county judge
ship office.
