SKINNED THE JOSEPHINE
COUNTY STATESMAN.
An orator with the euphonious
name of Smith has been Imported
from Josephine county to represent
Mr. broth, Republican candidate
for joint senator of this dietriot, id
the Lane county canvass, Mr,
Voatob gave Smith the priviloge of
appearing (or his opponont at Co
burg yesterday.
It was the ohance Veatoh had
beon waiting for aiuoe the forty
days he and Smith were fellow
members in the Oregon legislature
of 1895.
Mr. Veatoh told the audience
that Smith was unanimous in vot
ing for every job and steal that
came before that bnlv. Veatoh
was there and knows the record.
The audience evinced appreciation
of the scientific manner in which
Smith was skinned by repeated
cheeriDg. And from the manner
Smith fidgeted an observer would
have thought tho board on which
his person rested was covered with
taoke, of oddietblnrt else equally

We are of the ouiuion Josephine
county Smith will be missing the
rest ot the campaign, at least irorn
the sound of Mr. Veatch's voice.
BRYAN ON UNION
Eztraot Irom speech at Boston April 15.
I believe in co-operation. Men
must co-operate io a party if they
onnlrl h nfliaative. You caunot
fight a battle without the organiza
tion that a party bringB. I bave
always believed in parties, but I
believe that a party should be the
means, not tbe end, and that the
individual should employ that
rmrr.tr whinh nflflrs the best promise
of securing the best end, and I be
lieve, too, that wbere parties are
going in tbe same direction, al
thnnch under different names, they
ought to co-operate as far as pos
sible.
What difference does it make If
nnnnliiitii wish sums things that
silver republicans and democrats
do not favor? What difference
does it make if democrats want
some things that populists and
silver republicans do not favor?
What difference does it make if
demoorata favor some things that
are not wholly acceptable to popu

what difference does it make? We
agree on the questions directly
before us.
BABY BEEF.
A Btook journal remarks that
twenty-five years ago the prize
beef animal was a 10 to 12 year
old ox whioh bad served bis day
and generation as a beast of bur len,
doing farm work, and tben was fed
for a year until be made a oarcaBB
of 1800 or 1900 pounds. It will be
remembered when it was believed
that the best beef was that grown
on to tbe framework of such an
aged beast and when what is now
called beef was of no account.
Times bave changed. A steer
seldom now lives more than three
years, most of them less. The old
ox baof is a thing of the past and
the publio taBte is demanding
young beef, even baby beef, wbioh
finds a market at a year old. Tbe
calf of the beef breeds which is
kept fat from the day it is born
and turns the scales at 1000 or
1100 pounds at fifteen months will
bring tbe top of the market and the
most profit to its owner.
An old granger over at Coburg,
yesterday, remarked that Lawrenoe
Harris must have a wrong impres
sion as t the office for whioh he is
running. His speech was made up
ol stock uampaign literature state
ments about expansion, the Philip
pines, and other national issues.
The speeoh would have answered
for Chicago or Podunk equally
with Coburg. County and Btate
affairs were ignored. The old
granger suggested that "Mr . Harris
must think he is up for ooogress or
United States Benator."
If E. R. Sklpworth U permitted
to finish the county oanyass there
will be no possibility of his defeat
at the polls Monday, June 4. His
speeoh at Coburg yesterday was
powerful presentation of facts that
could not but impress his auditors
with the belief that their interests
would be ably championed should
he be elected to the legislature.-
