Under former treasurers the
offloe in the oourtbouse was dosed
a no inoonBiderable portion of the
time, and persons having warrants
to oash were compelled to visit the
banks or, during tax oolleotion
times In other days, when the
oounty had no one hundred ' and
ten thousand dollar debt, pass them
into the sheriff offloe. For many
years ex-County Ulerk Ware cashed
no inoonsidorable proportion ot
oounty and eohool warrants, the
treasurer leaving mouey with him
for that purpose. And the ' doors
of the treasurer's offloe were looked
for days at a time.
It is different now. Qo to the
courthouse at any hour of the bus
iness day and you will find "Abo"
Patterson in his offloe ready to
transact any business that pertains
to his official duties. It is a pleas
ant departure from tlje old estab
lished regime.

SIONER. Wm. Sohulmerich, the Demo
cratic People's nominee for dairy
and food commissioner, is a resident
of Washington county, where be has
been engaged in the dairy business
for a number of years, conducting
one of the largest and most success
ful dairies in that section of the
state.
lie was born in Eldorado oounty,
Cnl., and is a German, With his
parents he oatne to Oregon in 1875,
when he was 14 years of age. Not
withstanding he was borne of this
in - - ' i. . ,Al . I
country, he speaks the German
language, and is the only nominee
on the state tiokets who is a Ger
man. Mr. Sohulmerich baa made a
finanoial success of the dairy bus
iness when others have failed. He
has done this because be has made
a thorough study of the business.
He has done much to advance the
interests of the State Dairy Asso
ciation in a practical way, and hat
been very aotive in bringing to
publio notice all efforts of adulter
ation in the dairy line.
He is at present the vice-president
of the state association, and
has a large acquaintance with state
dairymen, all of whom recognize
his fitness and capability to prop
erly administer the duties of the
office to whioh be aspires.
A CHANCE TO EXPLAIN.
Register, May 10: J. L. Taylor,
who will he county commissioner
after the June eleotion. is in Eu
gene from Hermann. '
While Mr. Taylor is in town he
should have the Register make
some explanation of his 36 cents
tax he pays on 36 head of sbeep as
a speoial tax of one cent a head.
If Mr. Taylor has any anxiety to
help disburse the $250,000 that will
pass through the hands of the
oounty court for county purposes
during the next four years he
should explain how it is that he
does not pay one cent of the amount
that the taxpayers are paying into
the oounty treasury this year on
that 23.50 mills levy.
Personally we have no objeotion
to Mr. Taylor, but ordinary busi
ness prudence and foresight de
mand the selection of a man for
commissioner who hts substantial
interests in tbe oounty otherwise
than a mere place ot residence.
Mr. Taylor does not fulfill the
conditions that should be required
of a county oommiBBioner, and
should not be elected. This is not
a matter of sentiment and politios.
It is a plain business proposition
that affeolB the wellfare of every
taxpayer in the oounty.
DERELICIT VOTERS.
The Lane oounty registration
books make it evident that not a
few voters failed to vote at previous
eleotions, probably not less than
ten to twenty per cent. There
will be some who will not
register, but this class will
probably .be small on aqcount
of the extended period of time
allowed for registration, also the
faot that the presidential election
in November spurs some people
who would not register . und
