Between tbe bare assertion of tbe
Register and tbe sworn statemeit
of County Clerk Lee as to the
"actual Indebtedness" of the county
there will be no hesitation as to
whom to believe. We are sur
prised though that tbe Register
should have the hardihood to pub
lish the above assertion as to
county indebtedness and the report
of County Clerk Lee in tbe same
issue.
THE INDIAN FAMIXE.

terrible famine that is afflicting
that oountry:
Tbe condition of famine-siricken
India today is something perfectly
awful to contemplate. When tbe
famine set in tbe people began to
sell everything they bad that might !
get a little grain for food, Tbey j
'ook tbe door from their bouses!
and sold them; Slid their furnitnre
and (arming utensils, and then,
when they had no longer anything
to sell, tbey sold their oUldren.
The boys didn't sell well, and tbe
traffio is largely in girls.
I saw girls in one town, just be
fore I came away, being sold for 30
cents apiece, fney were bought
up by the MohammedanB.
Tbe temperance people of Aurora,
Illinois, have devised a new plan
for dosing Baloons. Those who are
opposed to closing the Baloons point
to the mulot license of $1100, which
is received from each, and show
that tbe taxpayers would have to
take up additional burdens if the
saloons were closed, and it is to
answer tbie point that the present
movement is being organized. It
is proposed to raise $37,000, tbe
sum wbioh is paid into the city
treasury each year as license fees
by the Baloons, and then when this
amount is seoured the temperance
people will offer it to the oity and
ask that tbe saloons be dosed.
In New Zealand the telegraph
toll iB one cent per word with a
minimum fee of twelve cents. It
has proven to be too muoh and the
fee will be reduced because it ac
cumulates a surplus in the public
treasury. This low rate is made
possible by governmental owner
ship and operation. The United
States government should own the
telegraphic system of the country
and operate it the same as it does
the transportation and delivery of
mail matter, at tha lowest possible
oharge to the public.
