PIPE 0RGAX RECITAL.
Edgar E. Conrsen in Eugene
Monday, April 30.
The carpenters who were making the
necessary changes iu the Methodist
churoh for the accommodation of the
pipe organ have finished their work
The organ men have yet to make
satisfactory motor connections for
blowing. When these connections
have been made the organ will be
turned over to the organ committee of
the church for their acceptance.
There seems to be little doubt tbat it
will be aooepted, and arrangements
have been made at a very large
expense to secure Professor Edgar E
Coursen, ot Portland, to give the
opening recital on the new organ. It
has been after muob correspondence in
regard to the dates that Professor
Coursen consented to come. A mem
ber of the committee stated that during
the next 14 days Mr Coursen bad
engaeements tbat would keep him In
Portland, and tbat it seemed for a
lime that the plan would have to be
abandoned. Several other organists
were suggested, but Mr Couraen's
name was Identified with highest
excellence In music, and it seemed
more advisable to accommodate the
date of the oonoert to Mr Coursen
than to secure some other organist
who bad plenty of vacant dates. The
commutes desires that the people of
Eugene shall bear the organ for the
first time under the skillful manipula
tion of an artist.
The only date upon which Mr
Coursen could come seemed to be
Monday, April SO, and the oonoert
will be given on that date.
Preliminary testa of the organ Indi
cate tbat It is an Instrument of great
power and rare sweetness. ' Several
loose windows bave been detected by
the heavy tones . of the pedal organ
wbiob rattled them In no uncertain
fashion. These windows will be made
to fit In tbelr frames before April 30.
The organ contains about 600 pipes
and presents a most artlstlo appear
ance, there being nothing loud or
glaring about the coloring. The case
Is of antique oak finish and is taste
fully oarved and deoorated.
Special arrangements will be made
for tbe comfortable seating of the
audience. In spite of the great
expense of the concert, only a nominal
admission fee of 60 cents will be
charged, and children under 12 years
of age will be admitted tor 26 cents.
Tbe complete program will be pub
lished later.
A Commercial Club
Eugene will evidently be tbe last of
the valley towns to organize a com
mercial club, and It la to be hoped that
It will not be too far behind. Albany,
according to tbe papers of tbat olty, 1b
assured the establishment of euoh a
olub and It will prove a great benefit.
Salem has the Illlhee olub, without
which the business and professional
men of that city would feel lost. Of
I lie other towns of the state, Astoria,
The Dalles, Pendleton, Baker City,
LaGraude all have suoh organizations
while Portland is full of them. Eugene
Is tbe ouly town of progressive propor
Ions without this adjunot of rest and

MAYOR HARRIS.
He . Is Out Trying to
Tongue Funds
Raise
Salem, Aprl, tfl.-Dr. T. W. Harris,
of Eugene, chairman of the central
ootnmittee of the First Congressional
district, aceooipanltd by Census
Supervisor C. B. Winn, was in Salem
today, soliciting subscriptions to the
Congressional campaign fund. Owing
to the fact that the Salem Statesman,
ellted by Tongue's campaign manager
of two years ago, is figlitlug the repub
lican candidate for county olerk, Dr.
Harris did not receive much encourage
ment here. W. W, Hall served the
county one term as clerk, and fulfilled
his duties so well that he was renomi
nated without opposltiou and with a
tremendous storm of applause. It is
Bsld that if the matter had been left to
a vote in 1 be democratic convention,
Hull's n imlnatlon would bave been
indorsed by that body. Nevertheless,
the Statesman has been carrying on a
bitter fight against flail's election.
Leading republicans here declare
themselves plainly to the effect that
unless Tongue's friends will support
the republican ticket, tbey will
neither contribute to the campaign
fund nor vote for Tonguejat the polls.
Borne made themselves understood on
this polut today when asked by Dr.
Harris for assistance.
