" WEBFOOT NEVER FAILS.
While all kinds of vegetation are
thriving in this evergreen North
west, the southern part of our
neighbor state of the south is ex
.perienoing' one of her frequent
drouths. In addition to the lack
of rainfall the artesian wells show
a diminishing supply, and farmers
and prohardists are in dire straits.
Here is a late account:
An artesian well at Claremont,
'.wo miles east of Pomona, which
has been flowing most of tbe time
for the last ten years, dropped 70
feet in a few days and is now being
outlined with a large air compressor.
Gasoline engines are heard barking
in every direction and more wells
are being sunk all tbe time. While
tbe numerous earthquakes nave at
times served to increase tbe supply
of subterranean streams and b pout
ers, yet tbe general tendency of the
mtput of water is to dimimsn, so
rnaoh so, in fact, that people are
'zetting anxious. Some persons
ho baye bat one or two acres of
land are drilling walla and Betting
up windmills In hopes of getting
enough water to keep their trees
tlive. There are, of course, some
localities where underground water
is still plentiful and orange trees
and alfalfa fields are looking green
and fresh, but in other fields near
by Buffering trees are to be seen, to
say nothing about tbe many de
ciduous orchards alonij tbe foot
hills anj mesa lands where no
water is to be , had for love nor
money.
