mington, Delaware, dispatch of
March 27:
The Wilmington MethodUt
Episcopal conference, which repre
senU Delaware and a portion of
Maryland, today adopted a resolu
tion condemn iD? the army canteen
and the use and sale of liquors in
our new possessions. Tho temper
ance committee also presented
another resolution, which con
demned President MoKinley, as a
member of the Methodist filpiscopal
church, for'publio aud private tip
pling. It precipitated a hot dis
cussion, and was finally defeated
by a vote of 67 to 43. The reso
lution requesting the general con
ference to censure President Mo
Kinley for setting aBide the anti
canteen law, and to censure him for
drioking liquor, was adopted after
the neraonal referenoe to the presi
dent's drinking bad been stricken
out.
UNION AND REPUBLICAN.
The Albany Democrat makes
this comparison of Union and Re
publican county administrations:
It costs $79,000 a year to run
Marion county, and $35,000 to run
Linn county. Under the present
economical administration the at
fairs of the county have been kept
in splendid condition, the roads
and bridges being kept up and
general improvements having been
made with a speoial effort in pro
gress for giving the county the
best roads in the etnle.
Linn oounty has a Union party
administration. Marion oounty is
solidly Republican.
Bob Ingereoll told the following:
"I have found the cares which
come to a man in a high place are
enormous. After (iarneld was
nominated I said to him: 'Garfield,
you are going to he elected, I hope,
but by the time you have been
president a month you'll wisn you
were running an iue-house in
Hades.'
"1 saw bim after he had been
president awhile, and I said: 'Well,
liarfield, how does it go?'
"'I don't know but I prefer the
ice-house business,' he replied."

county Republican delegates are
solid for Judge Hewitt for congress,
Jackson is solid for Speaker Garter,

mas for Geo. Brownoll, Benton lor
John D. Daly, and Washington for
Tongue.
Linn county Republicans are not
i whit behind those ot Lane county.
They also have a boss. A Mr,

of tbe town bosses and tbrow dust
