A CONjIsrBNT REPUBLICAN.
Senator Chandler of New Hamp
shire is one Republican who be
lieves that his party should fulfill
its pledges in bohalf of Bilvor. He
addressed the senate the other day
on the ponding financial bill, do
signed to more firmly fix the gold
standard on the oouotry, and said
in part:
The passage of the bill, without
adequate recognition of the desire
and determination of the Amerloan
people that silver shall be remon
etixed, is a deflation ot the republi
can platform of 1800, and without
such recognition In the bill I oan
not give to it my vote. It would
be unqualified gold monometallism,
aod to advocate or submit to this
is the abandonment of republican
principles.
The Natal Witness "relates that
after the battle of Colento a Boer
soldier came upon the oorpie of a
private of the Uonnaught rangers.
He had stripped it of valuables
when his eye fell upon a crucifix
suspended around tht brave fellow's
. neok. Intently the burgher gaied
on the emblem and then hastily re
placed the booty he bad annexed,
covered the dead man's face , and
disappeared among the kopjes. The
Bier is strongly opposed to Cathol
icism, but he would not rob the
oorpse of a man who, like himself,
believed in Christ, whatever differ
aces might exist a to the manner
of expressing that belief.
The report of the Review regard
ing the nnlon of silver foroes la 1
Douglas county is gratifying. Lane
county silver people are equally
harmonious and enthusiastic The
Review says:
The complete and harmonious
union of the forces opposed to re
publicanism, aa represented by the
Hanna regime, effected in this city
Saturday, is indeed gratifying to
the true friends of reform. The at
tendance was large and all were en
thusiastic and anxious to begin the
real work of the campaign a feel
ing that betokens yictory at tho
polls.
InflueDza.-f'the grippe," is pre
valent throughout Germany, afflict
ing a very large percentage of the
population. In Berlin there is
hardly a family without a sufferer.
It is said there is nothing new un
der the sun but the saying is not
correct, at least so far as the grippe
is oonoerned. It is only a few years
since it made its initial appearance,
spreading over the entire oivilized
worl 1 within a ifew months. It is
not contagious, but seems to be ep
idemic in nature.
Artillery makes much noise and
correspondingly depresses the spirits
of the enemy, yet it is not to be
compared to the whistling little
rifle bullet for deadly effectiveness.
The siege of Mafeklng is a case in
point. ' The British garrison has
kept tally on thirteen hundred pro
jectiles that passed over or fell in
the town, yet the number of per
sons killed or Injured tnereby
number only about half a dozen.
The Chinese government has
again warned viceroys and govern
ors of provincos to resist French
nd Italian, aggression.! If talk
and deorees could defend a oountry
China would not suffer the inevi
table partition.
I never heard of a man who ad
vertised thoroughly, carefully, per
sistently and regularly for a whole
year that was not alterwarde an
