A very roumrknblo instance of the
tracing of a criminal by means of a
tlreaui occurred in St. Louis. A woman
named xiary Thornton was detained
In custody for a mouth, charged with
the murder of her husband. A week
or so after her arrest sho requested to
see ouo of tha prison oBlclals. and told
him sho had dreamed that an Individ
ual named Oeorgo liny had murdered
her spouse, giving tho oUlcial at tho
same time full details of tho tragedy
as witnessed In her vision. The man
Hay was not suspected at tho time,
but tho prison authorities wero so
much impressed by tho woman's ob
vious earnestness tbat a search was at
once nmdo for him.
After some delay ho was traced and
charged with the crlmo, tho details o
tho same as seen in the dream Doing
rehearsed to him. Overcome with as
tonishment, he then and thero con
fessed that he had committed tho
crime. Curiously enough, tho woman
had only met tho murderer onco and
believed him to bo on tho very best ot'
terms with her husband.
Almost ns remarkablo was tho caso
of a woman named Drew, who dream
ed one night that her husband, a re
tired sailor, had been murdered by a
peddler at a Gravcseud tavern, where
the said husband was in tho habit of
putting up when visiting the town in
question. The tirst news that awaited
her on rising In the morning was tbat
her spouse bad been assassinated at
the very tavern she had seen In her ex
traordinary vision, whereupon sho
burst Into hysterical tears and cried
out that her dream had come true.
She calmed down somewhat after a
few hours and then banded tho police
olliclals an exact description of tho
peddler of tho vision, giving a mlnuto
account of his dress, which included a
blue coat of a very peculiar pattern.
Marvelous as tho fact may appear, a
man wearing such a coat and follow
ing the occupation of a peddler was
discovered two days later at an Inu
some six miles from Oravcscnd, and,
on being taxed with tho crime, ho at
once admitted that bo was guilty and
that robbery had been the motive of
the outrage. Ho was hanged soon aft
erward, his doom having been brought
about by the flimsy evidence of a wom
an's dream.
Women as dreamers seem more suc
cessful than men, but a rather peculiar
Instance of a crime being traced by a
vision and In which tho dreamer was a
member ot tho male sex comes from
Rcnnes, in Franco. A worthy mer
chant, having quitted bis office one
Saturday evening, proceeded home to
dinner and after enjoying a substan
tial meal lay down on tho couch and
fell Into a light doze. A very vivid
dream then came to him wherein ho
saw two men of tho burglar typo en
gaged In rifling tho snfo in his office,
and so much impressed was ho by tho
vision that ho resolved, upon awaken
ing, to at once go to tho offico aud seo
that evcrythlngwasundorlock and key.
His amazement may be Imagined
when, on arriving there, ho discovered
tho door forced and a burglary lu prog
ress. To summon a couplo of gen
darmes was tho work of an Instant,
and five minutes later tho thloves, who
proved to bo notorious housebreakers,
were on their way to tho pollco depot,
whero tho prosecutor told his extraor
dinary story. In view of tho fact that
the safe contained valuables to tho ex
tent of some thousands of pounds, tho
dream In question proved a very tor-
tunate one for the dreamer.
How to explain these marvelous man

compass. Perchance the theory of te
lepathy may have something to do with
the mysterious business, but even that
theory would appear rather inadequate
In such cases as the aforementioned

the greatest excitement of the time.
The forger, a young man of eight or
nine and twenty, bad become acquaint
ed with a rich publisher, at whoso
house ho became a constant guest Ono
day tho publisher's bankers discovered
that some one was forging their client's
signature to various largo checks, and
two detectives were at once Instructed
to look out for the culprit
Their efforts proved useless, but ono
evenlne the publisher's youngest daugu
ter, a littlo girl of 11, dreamed that
she saw a man whom sho described as
"like Mr. Blank,'' tho visitor to whom
referenco has been made, sitting In a
room in Maino street copying her ra-
tiler's signature. Tbo child's dream

the outset eventually promised to have

then transpired that ho was a man who
was wanted for manifold forgeries
throughout tho Union, and ho was sent
to prison for a very long term.
The child's dream was all tho more
extraordinary In vlow of the fact that
she was too young to understand the
leading incidents of tho buslucss and
attributed tho copying of her father's
signature In tho dream to the "gentle
man wanting to write nicely, like papa."
Strange, very strnnge, but none tho less
true, and proving onco moro that, ns
