broken window in the caboose
wherein Miss Thorn was confhied
as a prisoner. There they
found the lonely, deserted girl, shiver

eyes swollen aud red from crying. She
would not tell her story, so Mr. Patter
son told her If she wished to get a place
to work she might go and inquire at
Mrs. Currie's boarding house. This
she consented to do,, but apparently
misunderstood his directions, and
asked at other houses for work In order
to buy a ticket lo Cottage Gro.e.
Finally she came to the bouse of Q. W.
Kruse, at the corner of Jackson and
Lane streetp, and wrs given dinner
there. She talked little of her circum

John Wiles, who lives near the
Soldiers' Home, was her uncle. She
was told how to go there, and walked
most of the way. MrWiles had never
seen her. but r. ;eived her kindly, but
realizing she was In trouble aud would
not talk regarding it, brought her
back 13 town. He also purchased her
a ticket to Cottage Grove, telling her to
go home and confide In her parents,
