Hmelt are earlier than ever this year,
the main run reaching the mouth of
the Cowillz Haturday. Tods upon
tons of the fish were .dipped np on
riunday, and the harvest has contin
ued every day since. Yesterday the
local price for smelt was three pounds
for 10 cents, and large quantities were
disposed of. The fish are at their best
at the first of the season, and now
make an ei eel lent fry. The nli are
full grown, and arc as oily as ever.
Hmelt can almost be fried in their
own grease. Early settlers called smelt
the candle fish, because, lu the dried
state, when one end waa lighted the
fiah would burn like a candle, the fl-li
being almost all grease, (lie backbone
serving as a wick. Since electricity and
ooal oil have come into genera! use,
melt are no longer used for Illuminat
ing purpose.
