An accident or Blight proportions oc
curred at the Lucky Boy mill. Blue

starting of tbe mill.
During the day I lie engine were
started and the cru -her operated for a
few hours. That night a small cave-In
occurred from tbe upper end of the
cut on which the mill stands, striking
the engine room and buried a wheel
and some water pipes, whiob It
damaged slightly. Felix Sparks who
came down from Blue River last night
slates the damage was considered
trifling, and from other sources it is
learued that It was expected the fall
ing dirt would be cleared away In one
day. The slide was probably caused
by tbe vioration of I lie engines as tbe
out was nut timbered. Tbe mill baa
already started up again.
Obituary.
H. C. Huston was born in Washing
ton county, Indiana, May 10, 1828.
Moved to Iowa In 1860, and tbe Bame
year went to Missouri. He crossed tbe
plains to Oregon with the emigration
of 1S52 and permanently settled In
Lane county in 1853 on tbe plaoe where
be died, twelve miles west of Eugene
on the "American" bottom.
Mr Huston served in tbe volunteer
army that was organized to quell the
Indian outbreaks in Southern Oregon
in 1855.6. He enlisted in company C,
geouiid reeruiting battalion, and was
mustered In at Eugece City, March
29, 1866. With bis company, after
having seen service In tbe Umpqua
and Rogue Kiver valleys, and the In
dians having been whipped into sub
jection, be was mustered out July 8,
1866. He leaves few of tbe comrades
who marobed with him to protect tbe
settlers.
At the general election of 1806 Mr.
HuBton was eleoted a state senator
from Lane county as a democrat, tbe
party with which bis affiliations were
life long. Mora (ban thirty years later
In 1898, he was asraiu a candidate lor
tbe same office, this time on tbe Union
tioket, but was defeated.
Mr. Huston was married In 1866 to
Miss Lydla Zumwalt, daughter of
Isaao Zumwalt of Irviug precinct.
Twelve children were born lo the
union, ten of whom survive. He was
71 years, 7 months aud 8 days of age.
The funeral services were conducted
by Rev. J. C. Richardson. Tbe tuin
ister who thus paid tbe last sad tribute
to bis friend bad first met him nearly
half a century ago. Tbe one In his
teens, the deceased In the first flush of
manhood. The text was tbe 6ili verso
of tbe 90th psalm. A large eouoouiae
of frieuds paid tbolr last respeots to
tbe pioneer.
H. C. Huston had some of tbe quali
ties ol geuius, and bad fortune placed
the current of his life in a dlflerent
channel his name would not have been
confined to a neighborhood. As it
was he lived a good oltlzen, a faithful
husband and a kind father.

"The Island baa not been so produc

heavy export tax that it did not pay to
produce sugar and ooftee, the principal
produols. There has never been but a
small part of tbe Island cultivated.
"This island Is considered healthy
and yellow fever is not common on tbe
land, but Is sometimes on tbe ships.
Times are bard and money Is scarce.
There has been but little change
here. In place of Spain collecting the

we have our own soldiers in place of
Spaniards, wbloh is muoh more
agreeable, Tbe United States is

"I have done fairly well, but have
been seriously afflicted. In July I
was stricken with paralysis from the
waist down. Did net Buffer any pain
but was weak; lost my appetite and 50
or 60 poundB In weight; was confined
to my room for seven weeks, and did
not see anyone during that time that
