"SOUND" M08E.
President MoKinley arid the
members of the present congress
were elected to put this country
mare firmly on the gold standard
basis. The announcement of the
intended adoption of the Reed gag
rules leaves no donbt that the
pledge will be oarried out. Sil
ver bullion has fallen to the
lowest price of . the century, and
wheat, whioh - has never tailed to
aooompany silver in market quota
tions, during normal orop produo
tion years, is even below the price
of its running mate.
The gold dollar ot the British
importers buys more wheat than
ever. Our wheat growers aTiould
be proud of that forty cent a bushel
gold prloe, Wheatgro'wers of silver
oountrlos, freight rates proportion
ate, are getting eighty oents in sil ver,
Our fArmers, though, may console
themselves with the asBuranoes ol
MoKinley and his oolleaguss thai
they are paid in "sound" money.
. It may be prosperity, with a big
bat the agricultural classes
feel that ethers are reaping what
ever harycit there may bo.
SIMPLE GEOLOUY.
An explorer In a new country
makes most wonderful discoveries
by observing very small facts. By
the gravel he knews the exact rocke
which are drained by the river.
Speckled rocks, such as granite,
tell a story of probably mountain
ranges, even if none are In sight;
and by the speokles the explorer
can tell whether the mountain is
brand-new and jagged, or old and
worn. ,,
By the pebbles it is quite easy,
with a little praotioe, to read off the
history of a country, to guess at its
age, r ums mean a onaix forma
tion; ironsands is the best possible
indication of gold; lavas and basalts
mean volcanio action, Terraoes
long the ooast mean It is raising
by jumps, as may be seen in Nor
way and Chile. Where the rivers
cut deep between sheer walls on
their coorse from the mountain to
the sea, it shows there is no rainfall.
Modern shells on top of bieh
mountains mean that the range has
only recently been lifted out of the
sea.
"PRIME I.OA8T (CAYUSK) MKAT"
Eastern Oregon wortb!e.-B cayusee
may continue to range the bunch
grass plains aud hills without
further danger of being cut into
strips and canned for shipment to
European markets that want cheap
meat. These cayuseB, mixtures of
Indian ponies and our range horseB,
weigh from five to eight hundred
pounds gross, and are sold on the
range for about five dollars a head.
After slaughtering 4000 head of
horses and pickling the flesh for
shipment to Europe, the Linnton
abattoir, on the Willamette river a
few miles below Portland, has
olosed for the season. The greater
portion of the horse meat waB put
up in cans and labeled "Prime
Roast Meat." The profit this year
has been small owing to the op
position to the sale of American
meats in France and Gar many. A
lot of worthloBB oayuses have been
removed from the ranges and will
give more room for cattle and
sheep. The opening of the horse
oannery next year will depend
upon the European market.
TRDBT BEAUTIES.
Here is another object lesson for
the Amerloan farmer:
Barbed wire in 1898, $1.99.
Barbed wire in 1899, $4.25.
Increase in cost of production, 10
per cent.
Inorease in trust profits, 102 J per
oent.
Inoreaae in oost to consumers,
112 J per oent,
Something like two million
bushels of old wheat is still being
held in Whitman county by the
farmers who were looking for a
raise last year. The raise never
came and they expect to hold until
it does, in most if not all cases.
Tne holders are large farmers and
can afford to hold if they so desire.
Mother's Love
Is boundless. Yet it is utterly helpless
to give strength to the child born with a
low vitality. The time to give strength
to the child la before birth and to impart
this gift tlie mother herself must, be
strong. Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescrip
tion gives strength to mothers. It pre
serves them in robust health in the
months before baby comes. It practical
ly does away with the pains of mother
hood, and enables the mother to endow
her child with a hcnlthy body and a
happy disposition. "Favorite Prescrip
tion" contains no alcohol and is abso
lutely free from opium and cocaine.
"1 consider Dr. Pierre's Favorite Prescription
the best medicate made," writes Mrs. Mary
Murdock, of 110 Taylor at., Toneka, Kansas. "I
know U has uo etiiinl. 1 nm 'the mother of ten
children and only one living the tenth one.
Brie Is one year old and Is as well and lienrty as
can be. She is a beauty, of my other babies,
some were lrn at rliilil lime, but dead, others
were premature births; one lived to lie one year
old but she was always feeble. 1 tried differenl
doctors but none of them could tell what my
trouble was. I was examined by snrgeous but
they found nothing wrong. I did uot kuow
what to do, so I thought this last time I would
try lr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription, I took 11
the entire nine mouths and now have a fine
baby girl, and I can not praise your medicine
enough for the good It did me."
Dr. Pierce's Pellets cure heart-burn.
