Boom Tubnkd Over. For some
unaccountable, ree son the boom in the
McKen.le river belonging to the Booth
Kelly Lumber Co, aud in use to drive
tbe Woodcock & Forest large run of
logs Into tbe Coburg sawmill race,
Sunday night turned completely over
Some five or six men were on the boom
with lanterns when the boom acted so
queerly, and they were given a good
drenching, besides a scare that they
ill remember for many a day. A
rumor came to Eugene that 600 logs
passed under the boom, but Attorney
Woodcock Informs us that no logs, e-
ceptlng four or five, got away. The
boom was again placed In condi
tion yesterday. Aoout one-third t f
the late drive Is now In tbe Coburg

BERKELEY TEAM ALSO ASTONISHED.
S. F, Chrontole.
The University of California defeated
the University ot Oregou at football
yesterday afternoon on the Berkeley
campus by a score of 12 to 0 In about
forty-live miuutes of playing. It was
a hard fought contest that repeatedly
culled forth lira I Be for the, surprising
showing made by the Oregonlans, who
were supposed to be "easy." They
weighed on the average fifteen pouutfs
to the man less thau the Californians.
They came from a little college with
only about 100 men from which to
ohuose a football eleven, and were not
the best team iu tbe state, either, for
the Multnomah Athletic Club eleven
had recently beaten them, but they
turned general expeotatlous of 80 to 0
into a single touclidowu scored against
then in each half. They put up a gen
tlemanly, sportsmanlike game, and
showed the 2000 spectators that the
Berkeley lltie-smashers could bo stop
ped by luuoti lighter men, a-id that
the Berkeley tackles could be forced
buck for games.
Oregou used good judgment in the
selection of plays. Punting was freely
re-orted to ou the third down, even
when there was but half a yard to
Kiiln to retain the ball. During the
guiue Payne, tho full-back, kicked fif
teen times, for u total gain of 418 yiuds,
an average of twenty-nine yards.
Ivaarsburg, California's full - back,
pouted ten times, making a net gain
of 332 jards, an average of thirty-three
yards.
Angel, Oregon's plucky right guard
weighing ouly 102 pounds, made dis
tinct impressiou agulnst California's
ui'glity Ureisberg, a showing all tho
more remarkable because Angoll has
only one arm for use, his right hand
being oir nt tho wrist. Nor was Angell
the ouly Oregouian Inrward who made
life a burden for his opponent. It wai
either an oft day for l'rlngle, the best
muu in the Berkeley line, or Jankway
Is nearly his niatoh. Not a few of Or
egon's best gains came right through
big Priugleon heavy bucking.
The largit runs of the game wore:
First half Kaarsberg, 11, 13, 80, ?5
yards; Hall, 15, 14; Womble, 10; Oreie-
berg, 12, all of California. Second half
Bishop of Oregon, 23, 22 yards; Kaart-
berg, 11; Pnngle, 10. Longest punts
Kaarsberg, 47, 43, 80, 80, 38, 80 yards;
Payne, 46, 44,40, 87, 86, 88, 80. No
kicks were blocked, or failures.
In yesleiday's game there were at
lee it four unintentional errors In de.
clsion, all against Oregon, one costing
her the ball when It was ouly her
third down and the oovetcd goal but
eight yards away.
8 1 Bulletin.
Tbe Oregon's work was free from
fumbling and their plays as quick and
accurate ps though the field were a
billiard table. And they gave the
Californians a good score.
The Californians went into the game
brlmfull of confidence that they had
an easv thing. There was a certain
carelessness and a sort of listleasntos of
spirit displayed by the blue and gold
players In tbe early stage of the game
which plainly told the contempt In
whloh they held their antagonists.
Confidence gave away to surprise
then to concern and Anally to alarm as
the lighter Webfeet plowed holes
through the Berkeley lino and tackled
the runners behind the supposedly Im
pregnable wall of guards and tackles.
In the first half of the game the Ore
gonlans had not caught on to the Ber
keley play and they were rather puz
.led at some of their tricks, but the
second half saw them take a tremen
dous brace and throughout the rest of
the game the hall was for the most
I art In Berkeley's territory.
The Oregon team proved the tough
est proposition the Blue and Oold ha
tackled this season, and tho smallues
of the score proved a great surprise to
tho Berkeleyans. Whipple and Warn
bol played the best defensive game fo
Berkeley, while Kaareburg and Smith
did the most effective ground gaining
The most notable feature of the game
was the comparative ease with whlcl
the Oregon boys lore up California'
Interference and broke through b
line. The Webfeet were at least 10
pounds lighter, but they played a bard
scientific game.
