SATURDAY -
- OCT 21
THE DAILY UUAKU TELrKilUPIIlC
SICKVlCE.
Tlio Daily Guard appreciates
the good words from subsorib'
ers regarding thoepeoial telegrapbio
- service we are giving our readers.
While not extensive it is carefully
oompiled, and gives the gist of im
por lan t happenings and news of
the preceding twooty-four hours.
These speaial diapatohes give the
newB to Eugene people nearly
twenty-four hours earlier than the
Oregonian.
The Daily Quaud spares no pains
to provide its readers with full ac
counts of local happenings, Vbe
addition of a short, but com pro-
hensive tetegrapio sorvloj cannot
but render the paper more popular
among the homes of the city. Yet
we do not expeot to gain but few, if
any subscribers bv the use of
tpeolal dispatches. The Daily al
ready oovered the fluid. We pub
lish a dally edition of G21 paporj,
nearly all of which are delivered
by oarriors in Eugene.
The four Eugene town precincts
oaBt 770 votes at tho general
election of 1S9S, and the
last census gave Eugono
population of 4200. Allowing Cve
persons to a family, the usual oouv
pulatiou for old Bottled communi
ties, Eugene has about 840 families,
Of these not less than 550 families
receive the Daily Uuaud direct,
while many others read it at second
hand. In addition to this circula
tion the Weekly Guahu, made up
of matter printed in the Daily, has
a olroulation through the Eugene
poslofflce of 209.
Convincing proofs of our claims,
the subscription lists, are open to
the inspection of advertisers. We
desire to sell space In these papers
on the same prinoiple as the
grojeryman does the staples, full
weight and measure. Advertising
is a business proposition, and ad
vertisers should know ai lo the ser
vice they receive. They can God
out from the Guard.

chartered this j-ar anil tbey paid
into the treasury of the common
wealth in incorporation fees $728,
023. This fuel gives tho Chicago News
occasion to say that $700,000 of this
enormous sum was paid by so
called trusts, not one of which is in
any sense New Jersey enlerprise,
and not one of which will ever be
seen or beard of in that statu except
as its products may be fold tnero,
and as it maintains a nominal
"head office" in Jersey City.
Regardless of whether courts or
other Btttte8 do7or do not issue re
straining or punitive mandates
against existing trusts, New Jersey
will go on licensing others to do
business in every state in the
Union,
This is one of the phases ol the
trUBt question which shows the
pressing need for a remedy that
shall be comprehensive as well as
effeotive.
YACHT liAClfltt COSTLY.
New York Cor Pittsburg Dispatch.)
It iB estimated that a million
dollars was spent by the people
who went to see the Shamrock
Columbia race; many spent money
virtually or nothing. There were
about 150,000 spectators on the
variouB boats. They paid anywhere
from $2 to $5 a ticket, so that at
least $750,000 was paid for paepae
in this way. Eaoh paBBenger
dnubllesB Bpeat $1 for food and
drink, making $900,000, and inci
dental expenses would make up the
other $100,000. The yaoht owuers
are supposed to have spent about
$25,000 a day in entertaining guests
and other expenses. So that it is
a costly thing to have even an at
tempt at an international yacht
fact.
Nearly all of the Republican
weeklies in Oregon are running a
12-inch advertisement for the New
York Tribune, edited by "Whitolaw
Reid. Tbey do this in order to
have the Tribune ''exchange" with
them. It may be interesting
know that the Tribune bitterly
oppoaoB the policy being pursued
by President McKinley in regard
to the Philippines, As tho original
