Bept. 12:
The night, as usual, was spent i-l
travel, aud in the inorniui: we pulled
into Euneue, a thriving city of about
,000. Here we viewed oue of the tuost
pieturejque landscapes we saw in Ore
gon. The oity is in what seems a vat
agricultural plain sutrounded and
tumned In by hills and mountains.
Words cauuot describe its rauduer.
It Is at the heud of the famous Willi. rii-
ette valley. The river is navigable to
this poiut, ex ept at low water alae.
Our reception was very cordial and our
treatment such that we will carry a,
long remembrance of this lovely epot.
They had been apprised of our cnmln
and laid themselves out to feast u.
They did it in high style. They culled
It a bulte, aud It was a "beau I." They
did uotsbow us the whole earth, but a
good portion of it. But the choice
thini! they did was to serve a lino
renkfost of rainbow trout. Forty men
hud been following the inoiinlaiu
streams, and their catoli was the Tea
uroof our breakfast. The meal was
like the claiu-bahe, or barbecue of the
Booth and the corn-roast of the West.
.'he lisli were cooked ou the spot iu
ttri frying puns, and brought to the
taolus and served smoking hot. Chick
en and other mean and fruit i in abun
dance were served also.
"A few days before we had b-en sur
feited with fish. Many of us had in come
tired ot (hem. Along the trip,
at The Dalles, Portland and Astoria,
salmon for breakfast, salmon for din
ner, salmon for supper fish, fish, tlnh.
We were sick of Ibein and had said we
hoped not to see another fish on the
trip. We approsobed the tables tills
morning with some reluotanoe, but a
very pleasant surprise awaited us.
Mountain trout captivated us, and we
ate more fish than we bad partaken of
at any other place or meal. It wus a
feast that any gourmand would have
relished. The men who were r.ut for
aging for trout ran across a bear and
killed II. Bruin weighed 400 pouuds,
and the tropby was displayed as one
of the produots of the country.
" The view from the butte resembles
very much that from the top of Look
out mountain. You look out into a
broad valley and a orooked stream
courses below, like that of the Tennes
see river. The magnificent forrwts and
mountain ranges that can be sten on
eery hand are grand and inspiring
and make it a very attractive place for
either homes or visitors. It has many
Ann residences and is known as the
Oltv of Homes.'
"Eugene is the seat of the State uni-
versltv College. The buildings are of
stone and present a very imposing a):
pearance from the eminence where wo
feasted. One of them, Vlllaru lian,
was named in commemoration of
Henrv Villard. of Northern Pacific
fame, who gave $50,000, a great tinau
oial aid to the college. It is a leading
Institution of the West. A divinity
sohool Is located here also. The length
of our stay here did not permit us to
e much of them, or of the town. At
this place we met Mr Frank Ij Glbbs,
oousln of James G Glbbs, who, with
his wife, was expectant upon meeting
their relative. We explained his ab
sence the beet we could. Ho (Mr Frank
Glbbs) Is one of tbe county officials
and is thoroughly in love with Oregon
