: Died of Apoplexy ut His Home u n the
l.iikes Near iloreiire.
Prof T M :artin, a pioneer school
teacher of Lane county, died at bis
home ou the "Lakes" across from
i Florence, In Douglas county, Monday
morning June 1-tll from a stroke of
: apoplexy, aged 04 yeais, 3 months and
j 12 days. The fatal blow came some
i lime the night before and he never re
covered consciousness. .
Prof Martin had un extensive ac
quaintance throughout Lane county,
He came to Eugene iu. 1808 and com-
m- need his work as pastor of the First
Baptist church while still a layman.
He was ordained a regular minister of
that denomination in Eugene July 11,
1868 and continued in that work for
several years. Finally his belief iu
Christianity experienced a change, and
he left the ministry, aud engaged iu
his former occupation as a s"hool
teacher. He was principal of the Eu
gene public schools lor several years
and afterward taught many terms iu
other localities throughout the county.
He w3 first ma-rled to Miss Green
and to them were horn two sons, Will
and Carey, both estimable young ineu.
On her death he married a Miss Miner
who survives him. The deceased was
an old soldier, being a meiiiber of the
Eugene post, also a Mason iu affiliation
with the Florence lodge, under whose
auspices the burial will take place at
Florence Wedneaduy.
HIS PEKSON AJj QUALITIES.
Prof Martin bad many good quail
ties that made him frieuds in every
walk of life from the lisping child
whose confide uce he obtained at once
in the schoolroom, to the matuie
woman or man who waB drawn to him
by his sympathetic nature. His gen
eral fund of information made him au
agieeable companion to men and
women of education and intelligence,
aud that he lived and walked not in a
wider sphere could beaattrlbuted to but
one dcflcleucy in his mental make-up.
His was an emotional nature he
lacked balance. And while be worked
with vim aud vigor at whatever came
to his bauds, he was apt to tire of his
employment.
Writing from a long personal ac
quaintance with the deceased we can
but have words of prulse for the nature
that was essentially a kindly one; not
from education of the brain but because
of a truly generous aud sympathetic
heart. Whatever may have been his
shortcomings, they sprang from the
excess of emotionalism which was part
of his very existence.
