More la tbo action of the board,
na introduce! by Judgo Noithup:
. It appears tbat on the 27th o:
Doo, 1898, Viola Mann, an oui-
ployeo of the Soldiers Iloiun at the
hospital, who had been suspended
by V li Uyar8,ooinmaudant,on the
Cth day of Deo, 1808, was restored
to her position by action of the
board, and It further appearing
that V II Byars, oommandant, on
the 4th day of January, 1809, when
said Viola Mann presented horBelf
to be reinstated to hor said position,
refused to allow bor to bo bo roliv
Btatod. And said W II Iiyara,
oommandant, now doelaroB that ho
is not willing to ro-inetatu her,
and tbat there is no position for
bor to occupy, and other good and
euQloient cauBO appearing at that
time, it Is thoreloro,
Hksui.vkd, That good and suftl
cient cause exists for the removal
of said V II llyars as oomuiandant
of the soldiers homo of the statu of
Oregon. It is thereforo ordered
that said V 11 liyure bo and he
hereby 1b removed as coiumandant
of the stalo soldiers' homo at Hose
burg, Oregon, for cause.
It is further ordered that said
Commandant coauo to exoroise all
control and authority of mid homo
at midnight on the 31st day of
January, 1S09.
Trustees Sheridan and Abraham
voted against tbo resolution. Slu-ri
dan and Abraham retired mid the
other trustees, Northup, Calkins
and Holt, eloclod V J Shipley, of
Portland, to fill the vacancy.
Miss Viola Manu was reinstated
in the position of hospital matron
to go on duty Feb 1, 1S99.
There is a good deal of sound
logic In Senator Mclaurin's unique
plea that imperialism, like charity,
ought to begin at home. The South
Carolinian argues that if the
stronger, more intelligent, better
civilized raco has a right to impofe
iU will upon the people of the
Philippine islands, why shouldn't
the same raco, in virtue of the
same superiority, settle thu vtxa
tious color question in the south by
frankly disfranchising the negroes
and ruling them in the same benev
olent but tyrannical spirit in which
it proposes to rule the Filipinos.
The lower huure of the legislature
baa pisted bills protecting raxor
back clams and crawfish. If three
moasurea gel salely past the teuate,
and governor, a waiting public may
again breathe freely.
