The Story of a Fourth of July Kowinr
Contest Ht Honolulu Which Kin n tic. I the

I'nrlo Sam's Jat-klr.
'About as iUs.nwl a Fourth of July
Ks t vor I experienced ou board a man-o'-var,"
;sid an ex-sailor of the navy
now living iu AVauhiuytou to u report
er, 41 was Independence d;y not many
years ngo down in tho harbor of Hono
lulu. Tho He-imingtou had an all star
racing boat's crew. Tho eiht had jimt
happened to bo assigned to tho lion
uiiiKton in u hunch befnro sho loft f..r
her Pnuitio eruiso, and several of tho
oarsmen had been members of the Oo
hmibia's eraek boat's crow that walloped
all of the British navy's boats' crews iu
KiiKlish waters a tew years before.
Tho lienuiutou's cutter was ono of
tho best in the navy, and she hud been
built for a meer. before, wo left tho
Maro Islaud navy yard for south Paeiiio
waters tho ship's racing crew had easily
beaten all of tho other crews of tho
ships lying at tho yard, including tho
tiptop crew of tho Olynipia and tho
Boston's lino crow. Wo thought that
wo were, about iu warm us they nialio
'cm after our crow put it on so many
other mau-o'-war crows, giving them a
couplo or nmintos tho start of us, too,
ou numerous occasions and still beating
tliem disgracefully.
"Tho people of Honolulu arranged
an aimatio festival for tho Fourth of
.luly tho Americans down thero ce.lo-
biated tho Fourth just as enthusiastic
ally as wo do up here and tho lion
nington's crow iigured iu it largely.
Our ship's colors were at tho fovo in tho
two races thut wero run with picked
Kanaka crows, and tho third and last
race of tho day was ono iu which our
crackajack eight was tofiguro. tho other
races having boon won by subcrewa
practically picked at random from
anions the strongest sotinieu.
"Wo thought this race was at our
mercy. It was to bo a four sided affair
ono crow of Kanaka sugar Hold workers,
a crow of Kanaka policemen and the
raci'.i',' crew of tho yacht Eleanor, bo
longing to Mr. Slater cf Providence,
that had pulled into Honolulu harbor
frjiu Japan a few days before. Our
crew diun t pay much attention to tho
yacht's racing crew and were only fig
uring on tho distance they could beat
the crew of Kanaka policemen, which
seemed tho most formidable.
Tho race was over tho four niilo
course carefully bloekt out in tho har
bor which was very snnoth by tho
Ibmululn iiquatio sportsmen, and tho
start was first rate. There wasn't a man,
fere or aft, on tho Bennington that
didn't stand to go broke to tho extent
of ut least a month's pay ou tho success
of tliu ISenninglcn's crew, mid we had
to give ii to 1, too, for it was generally
conceded that wo hail tho race at our
mercy.
Tho start, as I said, was good, and
the runnington'a crew showed in front
in-i t and started cut apparently to mako
a runaway race of it. Tho Kanuka po
licemen's crew trailed after them, pull-
steadily, then tho Kanaka sugar
workers ami, a goou ten longtus to tno
r, the Eleanor's crow. This was tho
way it looked for tho finish when the
Beunington's crew rounded tho stako
boat aud started for tho return trip.
Somo of tho Honolulu men who had
their momy up on tho two Kanuka
crews actually began to square accounts,
aud theory, 'Il'sallover Bennington!'
was heard all over tho bay. When tho
stakobout was rounded, it was noticed
that tho Eleanor's boat was sort of get
ting a move on itself, and the men
wero working like machines at a long,
steady stroke that certainly looked as if
it was cutting down tho Bennington's
load and tho lead cf the two Kanaka
boats.
'Two minutes after tho stakeboat
was rounded tho Eleanor's gang wore
right abreast of tho Kanaka cutters and
gaiuiug on them with every stroke, and
tho cox uu of tho Bennington's cutter,
hearing the yells of warning from tho
Bennington bluejackets ashore, looked
beiiiud him aud saw the Eleanor cutter
only two lengths behind him and com
ing like an electric launch. Our crew
was tired, and that's all there was
about, it.
"Tho Eleanor's crew had held them
selves in for tho finish, and they cer
tainly did mako a Garrisi.n finish of it.
Tho yacht's cutter Foot ahead of our
cutter a good mile from home, and then,
to make tho thing more galling, tho
crew actually stooped rowing until tho
Bennington's crew was alongside again.
Then they took to tho oars again, and
from then ou it was a howling farce.
The Eleanor's crew just romped their
cutter iu ten lengths ahead of our cut
ter and the Kanakas a quarter of a
niilo iu t ho roar.
"You never saw such a disgusted lot
of men in your life as the men una
ai'icer;- ui the Bennington. The Elea-
Lnr's ship company had taken all of tho
a to 1 uiitju v they could get on board
our ship, fur they knew they had a good
thiiiif u their i-Ieeve. Tho Eleanor's
crew on the whole trip around tho
world that was wound up at San Fran
cisco had not Ueii beaten once iu a cut
ter race, and tho yacht's sailors had
made all kinds of money in betting on
their crew. It was a minor sort of con
solation for us when wo found out that
five of tho Elei.uor's racing crew were
ex-American man-o'-war s men.
