"There have been a rood many rich
liuds In and about Dawson" sava Jo
seph Clarke, iu an interview with a
Skagway, Alaskau reporter. "There
are several rich claims on French Hill.
One old mau, about 70 yuira old, went
down 6t) feel on Fiench Hill before he
got anything, aud then hd was ottered
fSOOO for his claim, which lie declined.
He is now amo ig the tew nf tho wealthy
men uf tho district. One cannot
tell where the rich claims are for there
has been a good deal of salting, but
there is no denying tho fact that there
are some very rich properties. Every
thing around Dawson for miles and
miles has been staked out, aud there
are lu consequence hundreds of claim
that are uot worth anything. I bolieve
that a good mauy strikes will be mado
however, during the wlutar by tender
feet. A irood mauy fellows are In there
withoutllts and no money. It has
been the system with men holding
these wild-cat claims to piopose to a
tendei foot that the latter, having an
outllt, remain on the claim and pros
pect It, tho tenderfoot gelling a half
interest in the property for his work.
It may turn out in this way Unit a
good many of the claims may prove to
be gold-bearing lo the extent of being
rich. It Is a very oxpenslve country to
mine, and the ground has to bo very
rich to pay to work It. If any of these
wild-cat claims turn out well as a re
sult of this winter's work, It will be
the making of Dawson for another
seasou. Outside of this manner of
prospecting there will be very little
active mining this winter. Labor Is
again cheap lu there, and men are be
ing employed on claims for $100 per
month and board.
"If a man owns a building that coat
him $30,nC3, that will bo Included in
his etitimutu of Ids wealth, although
that same house can be duplicated
next spring for a muoh less sum. All
prices aru getting cheaper ut Dawson.
Food stud's are cheaper; whisky I-
oheaper. There Is enough whisky
and food at Dawson to run that town
and the people in there for two years.
Healy has reducsd the price of whisky
per drink from 50 cents lo 25 cents.
Lumber that this year sold for ( 200 per
thousand, will sell In tho spring lor fit)
or $50, aud tho houses that will be
built w ill be built of lumber and not
logs. There are several mills in there
and they will turn out lumber pretty
fi .
'Turkeys and chickens are oheapor
tliau meat now. There aro hundreds
and thousands of those fowls iu there.
There is at Dawson 403 head of hogs,
1000 sheep, and there Is distributed be
tween Fort Helkirk, Kink rap.ids and
Dawson over 2000 head of cattlo. There
are at Dawson four undertakers, and
they are doing a Innd-olllcu business.
I would not care to estimate the num
ber of saloons, but I never saw so many
before, and I never saw so mauy wo
men saloonkeepers. Assoou as the
freeze-up sets In there will bo about
60C0 men come out over the Ice, and
tho mostol them will be broke."

mulanu and liver troubles they navu

purely vegetable. They do uot weaken

slomuch and bowels greatly invlgor
ute the system. Itegular size 25 cents
per box. Sold by Wlikius & I, inn,
