The Cuban situation has reached
such a crisis that every good American
citizen ought to show his patriotism
and loyalty to the government. The
spectacle of a great people beginning a
war that may cost untold blood and
treasure, purely In the interests of Im
munity Is uuparalulled In the history
of tho world. It lean opportunity for
a demonstration of patriotism that
ought nut to be neglected.
I would therefore rcomuieud that
our citizens decorate their homes and
business houses tomorrow, April 22, In
honor of the beginning of American
participation in the struggle for Cuban
freedom.
In such a crisis as this there are no
parties. We are one people. Let us,
therefore unite in a patriotic demon
slraliou in favor of human liaerty and
hu mane geverumcnt.

Fate of the
i iii:a IIDUOI k MMMAnus,
Washington, D C, April 20. Much
apprehension la felt over the battle
ship Oregon, which has been ordered
from tho Paclilo station to Join the
Xerth Atlantic squadron. The vessel
should, about this time, be In the
Straits of Magellan. Its course to
homo waters will take the vessel
through the track of theSpanlsli ships.
Tho authorities of that nation are thor
oughly acquainted, It is now known,
with the iuteuded niovemouta of the
Oregon and tho vessel proserin herself
as a very attractive target to tho euemy.
It Is posslhlo that word may be got
ten to the Oregon and the vessel taken
Into Itlo and there await convoys from
tho fleet. It Is realized now that the
premature an unuueement of the depait-
ro ol the Oregon from San Francisco
was an unwise autlou.

Ueneral Lew Wallace OfTera His Bertl-
cea to Ills Country.
IniiIanai'OI.is, April 18. General
ew Wallace, the famous soldier,
llplomat and novelist, who was 71
vcars old April 10, has formally with
rawn from the race for the United
States senate, and announces that be
will outer the army and light tor
Cuban Independence. In a statement
given out General Wallace Bays:
In view of the certainty of war
with Spain, I havo teudored the gov
ernment in v services in the field. That
have been a eandldato for United
States senator may subject this aotlon
on my part to misconstruction, ao I
leg to announce my withdrawal from
the senatorial race. To the many re
publicans who have given ma their
support I oiler my hearty thanks and
most grateful acknowledgments."
General Wallace does not seem to be
speaking unadvisedly. It is known
that ho recently addressed a letter to the
president making tender of his servi
ces, and it is believed he received a
fuvoreble answer and aasiiranco that
would be appointed to a posi
tion commensurate with Ills talents
ind with his distinguished services
n tho war of the Rebellion. As the
regular army and National Guard are
already oftlcercd, It Is assumed that he
will be a general of volunteers.
