Tile musical event of tlio year was
the pretentatlnn of Itossini'a "Stabat
Mater" Buimilny night nt Villard Hall
by tho Eugene Oratorio Society, under
the direction of W Giflord Xah.
Miss lieuettu D.iriis acted as accom-
pauist, au j her lare musical gift was
uever more appreciated than on this
occasion. The chorus numbered about
10 voices.
Mrs R C Hrooks, soprano, Miss
Catherine Glen (Mcyinnvllle), con
tralto, Mr E I) Hesler, tenor, ond Mr
Irving M Glen, baritone, were the
principal vocalists and soloists, and
their work merits all due praise. Re
peated demands were made for encore
to solos, which in a numbor of In
stances were responded to.
Mrs Hrooks is a soprano of whom
Eugene has reason to be proud, her
totiie throughout the entile eveuiug
being marked by great expression,
and her sympathetic voice was in full
accord with the spirit of the recitation.
In her crowning number, '-When
Thou Comesl," her voice proved rich
In tone and of great volume from D lo
high C, taking tho latter tone lu tine
form.
Miss Gleu surprised ber many friends
by her rare contralto, which is of wide
range, powerful, mellow and sympa
thetic. Blie was heard probably to
best ttdvantag. in her solo, "I Will
Sing of Thy Great Mercy," and In the
quartet, "Hear Us, Lord." In the
litter tho tones of MiisGlen and Mm
Hrooks blended beautifully.
Mr Glen, possessing a very musical
vulcs, exceedingly well trained, and
puro In tnue throughout its entire
register, pleased the audience, as he
always docs. The rendition of such
musio as "Stabat Mater" was not
possible until ho came to live with us.
Mr Resler carried tho tenor parts
through with absolute nicety, hi i
velco being especially well adapted for
aocompanis'. work.
To the unceasing labor of (be
mtisloal director, Mr Nash, is due
largely the success of tho production of
such olasslc composition as this one.
The Oratorio Soclofy is a great factor .
as an educator of the musical peoplo,
and ovcry assistance should be ex
tended to it by our residents.
