Tit present secretary of the
treasury, Mr Ciage, is eminently
lilted to be the instrument of the
financiers in the effort lo complete
the scheme oinmenced twenty-four
years ago and cout nued without
interruption until the preesnl day.
He posesses a sublime faith in a
superiority of money over men and
supreme cr'Utemp'. fur tl.e rights,
the interests and opinions of the
people at large.
He knows that the gold standard
was adopted io the United Sla'e
without any partvever asking for
it; he knows that tor twenty-three
years after its adoption no party
evr dared commend it; be knows
that in the campaign ol 189C the
party couponed o. Lotting demo
crats was the only farly which
dared to declare the gold standard
a ble'sing; be knows that at the
polls 9J r cent registered their
opposition to a single gold standard
differing only as to the mean of
securing bimetallism; he knows
that the president, to whose party
he owes bis position, sent a commis
sion to Europe to beg other nations
to help us get rid of ihe gold stand
ard. MrUagekuowsthesefajts and yet
in spite of that knowledge, be is
seeking to organize a money trust

The advocates of the protective
tariff have been assuring tho toilers
in all departments of industry that
the Dingley bill was absolutely
necessary to save them from com
petition with the pauper labor of
other countries says the Cincin
nati Knquirer. Thousands of work
inguien voted for McKinley with
lne assurance) that their wages
would be increased if the Dingley
bill bectuue a law. The terrible
poverty aud destitution of the toil
ers In the old world were painted
in glowing colors. One of the re
sults of the adoption of the Dingley
bill is a sharp reduction of wages
in every sphere of labor. The pro
pevt is iha before McKinley's term
oi service is ended the working
classes will know by actual ex
perience what paujicr wages are.
There is a reduction of 10 per cent
at least all along tin line, with a
prospect of a still deeper cut.
Frankness and candor cimpel us
to admit that the reduction in
wages is not wholly due to the tariff,
but is chiefly due to tho disfran
chisement of one of the money
metals, hxiierietu-e is a ijood school
