Mining hlondiker Returns to His
Anxious Friends At Urldal Veil.
Portland Tlgram Jn. M.
Frank Atkins, who was thought to
have been foully dealt with, is all
right, and Is now visiting with friends
at Bridal Veil.
The article in last night's Telegram
brought out this inlormatlon: Atkins
hss besu moving about very quietly
and uuoBtentatiously since his returu
from the Northland last October, visit-
n g his mother and other relatives at
Eugene, aud taking In the glories of
the Uolden Gate and other poiuts of
nteiest in the land of sunshine.
He returned from the Klondike,
after having sold out his mining Inter
est:) there for a round flO.OOO. The
rigor of one winter In the Arctic zone
was quite enough for Atkins. Besides,
he was in ill health and homesick,
aud, as he had "money to burn," as It
were, he quietly returned to his old
haunts for the winter, but hr.s made
every preparation to return to the
Klondike on the steamer Oregon next
Sunday.
Atkins brought three fine dogs from
Eugene, and has purchased others
that will be delivered here by the time
be sail. In outfitting for another
lege he will purchase fully two tons of
supplies, a good sled, ice climbers,
warm furs as clothing, aud such
articles as, by experience, he has dis
covered of greatest utility and easiest
to handle.
Safety lu Buying Seeds.
There is no other way to measure the
value rf seed than by the value of the
crop. A good orop simply canuot
oome from poor seed. Second-rate
seeds will waste good land, good fertil
izer and good labor, and the crop won't
pay expenses. JNow, as the practical
farmer cannot afford to waste time
testing seeds to find out whether they
are true to name, sound and clean, it
stands to reason that the only sufe way
to buy seeds is to seek the protection of
name that has stood for reliability in
the past. The great seed house of D M
Ferry is Co, of Detroit, Mlcb, has sold
Beeds all over the United Slates and
Canada for the last forty-two years,
and the sttady growth of the business
Ib a sure I ml leal ion that Ferry seeds
have given satisfaction. Ferry's Heed
Annual for 1S9S, a standard guide for
farmers and gardeners, containing
much valuable information, is sent
free to persons writing for it.

A Speudld Production.
The Waldorf Company played in
Salem Weduesday night. The Sta'es
man says of the performance:
Rare talent was shown at the Reed
last night by the various members of
Janet Waldorl's company, iu the pro
duction of "The Hunchback," It being
one of the best aud most successful
performances ever seen in the Capita'
City. The audieuce, which gieeled
Miss Waldorf, the now star in an old
play, was not so b.rge as the work of
the actors merited, but every person
present made up lu appreciation for
thlsdefect, and every one of the live
acts of the celebrated comedy was
oheered to lua echo. Tbo success of
the play was such as to insure a repro
duction ot it sometime iu the future lu
this city, when a warm reception will
ceitainly be given Mls-s Waldorf aud
her talented company.
The star plays the difficult part of
Julia to perfection, showlug great abil
ity and a thorough understanding of
the character portrayed. Mr McVoy,
as Master Walter, has also an extre.ne
ly difficult to oarry, but he did it so
well last night as to earn the undying
admiration of the audieuce. All the
rest of the members of the aggregation
pleased the audience very much, and
while the play, presents liltlo that ex
cites the risibilities of the theatre go
ers, still the excellent and faithful work
of the company pleased all who wit

A letter from a friend to a Portland
policeman, published In the Telegram
says:
"I am not thinking of working for
wages, which are J 10 a day, or $1 per
hour and board yourself, If you cau
obtain work," Bays the writer. ' There
is not what one nitty call a restaurant
in town, on account of the scarcity of
grub. It costs a man $7 a day to live,
cooKiug his owu stutl. If you have no
provisions, you must take to the ice;
either to Dyeu, 650 niiks distant, or
Fort Vukou, 300 milet away, where the
steamers are stuck, making the scari
ty of grub here. I am told that Hour
recently sold here for $150 per sack, but
I don't knew it to he po. Yet I have
been offered $75 a sack, end other arti
cles are along the seme line.

"When you go prospecting you
must sink holes from IS to 25 feet In
depth, and thaw out tho ground with
fire, which makes it slow work. It
requires n month or more to sink a
hole, and then you may stiike pay

hnve sunk three or lour such holes
your grub is gone, aud even If you

Money is no good here
This country is not what it is pictured
to the outside world. It Is true some
mou have done well here, but you can
see men who have been in this couu-

can imagine the chances one takes in
coming here.

Hrylug Potatoes,
Scores of d tiers In the l'uget Sound
country are now busily engaged dry
ing all kinds of vegetables for the
great North, aud Sulem has also
caught the fever says the Journal. U
USonneinann, the State street grocer
has contracted for tin Stevens dryer
east of the city, aud will begin at once
putting up a superior article of dried
potato by the latest uud boot process.
The potatoes are first boiled and peeled;
then they are forced through a col
lander of sieve, after which the pro
duct is dried, and comes out of the kiln
looking very much like tlre-crumblsd
stone. This Is put up iu 25 nound
crew-top caus and thus placed on the
market. Mr Stevens has made some
successful experiments, aud will no
doubt be able to ' turn out a superior
commercial article. This kind of spuds
sells at 20 cents a pound lu Seattle and
other outfitting points, aud forms a
large portion of every Klondikei's stock
of provisions.
